|banghead|My gg grandfather Joseph Growden b 1804, St. Neot, Liskeard, Cornwall.
I have him in the 1841 census with his wife and children and then he disappeared. His daughter Louisa Growden, my great grandmother was born
in 1842 and she was the last child to be born to the family, so he must have
died between then and 1852, because his wife remarried in 1853. I can't find him in the deaths of the BMD so any advice or ideas from anyone would be appreciated.

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to look this up for me, but J.G who died in 1850
was my ggg grandfather. It's his son my gg grandfather also Joseph who I'm looking to find the death details of.

I have looked through the GRO Index for a death registration for Joseph between the years 1841 & 1853 and the only one I can find is the one Procat gave you. Perhaps his death was not registered, in which case you will probably have to consult the appropriate parish registers to determine when he died.

Would his wife have been Jane? There is a Jane Growden, listed as a widow on the 1851 census at St Neot. So that narrows it down another year...

Like Janet, I cannot locate any trace of Joseph dying between 1841 and 1853, apart from the one which has been dismissed already.

Either he was not registered for some reason (out of country perhaps?) or is mistranscribed. I tried a variety of alternative spellings with no luck, so either parish records or a very very tedious trawl through the BMD registers looking for possible mistranscribed names is the only real way forward.

There is always a chance that he didn't actually die of course. He may have left his wife and gone elsewhere - maybe abroad, maybe in the UK - in what is commonly called a "Poor Mans Divorce". It is not uncommon to find a woman listed as a widow whose husband was still alive but gone off....
If that is the case, then he could have changed his name as well - perhaps using a middle name as his first name (but keeping the surname). No checks were done on that sort of thing.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for trying to help me.

Yes, Jane was his widow and she remarried in 1851/2 and because of this I was convinced she was a widow. I didn't know about the poor man's divorce - how does it work? I suppose he could have gone walkabout. If he had been a Sailor, instead of a Stone Cutter, I could have assumed he had been lost a sea and left it there. I've been looking for info on parish records and from what I can gather they are all fee paying sites, or want you to buy CDs or books - any ideas?

I have an Elizabeth GROWDEN in my tree baptized in St Neot on 6 February 1803, the daughter of Joseph & Elizabeth. She married one of my cousins (his father was my 6x great-uncle) Charles LANGSFORD on 28 Nov 1826. Do you think there is any connection with your Growdens?

Hi Sue,

Yes, there is a connection.

I have Elizabeth Growden b 1803 in my tree on Ancestry. Her parents were Joseph Growden b 1773 and Elizabeth - they were my 3xg grandparents. My gg grandparents were Joseph Growden (their son) born 1804 and Jenefer Keast Barnicoat.
