Can anyone help me to find out what regiment a person would be in if he was a Staff Sgt and had something to do with music in the army please?
Thanks

Hi Mrs P
All Army regiments had bands. Have you anymore information?
Hi Neil
I'm afraid that is all the information I have other than his name.

You could try writing to Kneller Hall, (The Royal Military School of Music) depending upon which time frame you are talking about. They were very helpful when we wrote concerning an ancestor. There was a fee though, I am not sure how much information they would need before they could do a search. They do have a website, just google Kneller Hall.

What dates are you talking about? You'll probably be best off simply pursuing his service record which will answer all your questions.
Hi Peter
I'm talking circa 1955.
I cant get his service record as I can't find out what regiment he was in

1955? :D
Have you got a full complement of BMD certificates? "Occupation" might include his regiment.
I'm back.
Through a process of elimination we have worked out that this man would have been in the Royal Engineers at Ripon. Unfortunately I'm no closer to finding his Army Number.
Is there any way forward without this please?
Thank you

The MoD guidance notes say ...
www.
veterans-uk.info/pdfs/service_records/army_pack.pdf
Please note, if you do not know either the date of birth or the service number of the subject of your enquiry a successful search for the file is unlikely, no matter how much other information you are able to provide.
This says either ... or. I take this to mean that you need at least one of these pieces of information, not necessarily both. But I may be wrong.
Have you got the birth certificate? Or a death certificate after 1969 giving a date of birth?
Are there any lists anywhere of soldiers. There can't have been that many soldiers in 1954 in Royal Engineers at Ripon. At least not any great amount that I couldn't scroll through them?.

For general advice, you could try contacting the Royal Engineers Museum Library and Archives service.
www.
remuseum.org.uk/rem_research.htm
But please note that they don't hold service records, nor do they operate a full-blown research service.

The Royal Engineers are based in Claro Barracks in Ripon, Yorkshire. Any chance you can contact the adjutant thgere who may be able to help out or point you in some direction.
