Hello Genewizard,
I would like to take you up on your offer please.
My brickwall involves Thomas McAVELIA B.1858 North shields. On the birth certificate his father is given as Patrick McAVELIA but on his marriage to Johanna Victoria Mary Croft 9 may 1877 at St Bedes Chapel, South Shields his father is give as Michael McAvelia a Labourer
They had a daughter Ann Isabella McValia Born abt 1878 South Shields.
In the 1881 census Johanna Victoria (with surname variation) Mack with her daughter Ann Isabel Mack aged 3 are at 15 Low Lights Tynemouth.
On the 1891 census the family still using the Surname Mack have moved to 55 Low Lights Tynemouth-

Mary Mack Wife 40 B. N. Shields
Isabella Mack Dau. 13 B. S. Shields
John Mack Son 8 B. N. Shields

Thank you for all that work Alan,
Patrick and Mary at Millers Bank 1881 Ties in nicely with Thomas and family at 60 Mill Hill Tynemouth as they are using a very similar surname variation which is a bit of a feature with my McAvelia,s.
It does look as though Patrick is Thomas,s dad as in all my searches a Michael McAvelia has not been forthcoming.
Very grateful to you.

What helpfull people you are!!!
My Great Grandfather JOHN THOMAS HERRON was apparently shown in the war obituaries section in JULY/AUG 1916, having died of wounds in the battle of the Somme on 6/7/1916

He was the husband of JANE ANNE HERRON, of BEECHGROVE TERRACE, EDMONDSLEY, Durham.

He was aged 41 when he died, serving in the Tyneside Irish fusiliers
26/313

i visitted the museum at Alnwick castle, and also the village recently, looking for clues.
The village is like the wild west, and i had to stop a fight on the main street, and wait for the police to come and arrest the pair, both women!!!!

Lovely to see such generosity fruitful at BG Forums!!
I have Tynemouth connections but not sure what to ask for and where to start??! My GGGG grandfather George Cowey (~1809 - 13/5/1881) for the most part of his life was a Cordwainer/Shoemaker except for the 1861 census period where he was listed as an Innkeeper. I have tried to find out for which pub, someone suggested the Ship Inn but I don't even know where that came from and haven't been able to find anything on that since. Not sure if that would be in the newspaper records? Also I have no date of birth for him and am guessing birthyear from his age at death at Tynemouth Union Workhouse. He married 3 times first to Margaret Horseborough (?19/7/1829 Saint Hildas), 2nd to Mary Wood (18/2/1850 St Nicholas Cathedral N-U-T) and finally to Margaret Dale (28/12/1869 Tynemouth). I'm decended from the first marriage. I'd love to find out more about his family. I have no records of his mother or any siblings but I know his father's name was James Cowey and that he was a mariner from one of his wedding certs. I really don't expect you to specifically research my whole family tree, but I guess if you come across anything to do with "my lot" then I'd be grateful if you could let me know!!!
Cheers,
Summer.

Hi Edith I have just had a look at the newcastle evening chronicle death notice site http://www.genuki.org.uk:8080/big/eng/NBL/DeathNotices/index.html and I have found the following

Elizabeth Mccivet died 17/02/1894 aged 55 Byker
Ann Mccivet died 16/02/1898 no age Byker
James Mccivet died 21/09/1896 age 34 Byker,
so what I will do is get copies of the death notices from the evening chronicles and that may give you family members.

Gudday 'genewizard' from New Zealand; what a nice offer to do research.

I posted the following message on the Durham thread and got a reply with Stephen living with the nash family in 1851. If you can find anything else that would be wonderful.

"I'm researching my wife's family.

I've got a subscription to FINDMYPAST and found Stephen ELLIOTT living at Westmorland Place, Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1871. His date of birth is quoted as 1846; place of birth Northumberland. In 1881 he was living in William Street, Darlington and in 1891 Janson Street, Darlington; occupation Iron Works Labourer; and place of birth stated as Newcastle. Stephen married Mary H Atkinson in 1866 (from UKBMD)

I couldn't find him on Findmypast in 1861, and the 1851 census records are not yet available".

Hi,

thanks for your very kind offer.

My ancestor Jane Ann Fenwick married her cousin John Thomas Stott. Although the Fenwick and Stott family were living in Elswick, Newcastle on Tyne, the Fenwick family moved to Poplar, London (John Thomas Stott's parents remained in Elswick, Newcastle on Tyne).

Now the story goes that John Thomas Stott fell off a boat or ship somewhere!! The only proof his young widow had was a newspaper cutting! Now no-one knows which newspaper!

The facts are that John Thomas Stott married Jane in September 1900 aged 32, and he was still alive for the census on 31st March 1901 (aged 32) but Jane was definitely widowed by September 1910 when she remarried. Jane's children from her second marriage only recall having one half sister who was born march quarter of 1901, so I am assuming John Thomas died not long after 1901.

I still haven't found his death - so don't know which sea he died - but I would hope a memorial service would have taken place at his family's hometown at Elswick, Newcastle on Tyne.

Any info would be greatly appreciated,

thanks

Hi Genewizard! Just revisiting some other threads and had a new thought that maybe you could keep an eye out for anything to do with John George Cowey as well?? (son of Robert, who is son of George who I asked about earlier). Aren't I cheeky, sorry for the BIG favour. He was born in Sunderland (I think your Newcastle paper covers that too?) and we believe he came to Australia between the 1871 and 1881 census (probably closer to 1880), but don't know what year or what boat, etc. There is a family story that he had something to do with chemistry and may have harmed someone, intentionally or otherwise, which may have led to him deciding to leave England for Oz. I have found out that his cousin was a druggist assistant so there may be some truth??
http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33699
Marie C.. thought a check of the local newspapers may bear fruit if it was a criminal matter.
Nothing came up in an a2a search on John Cowey for that time period (or indeed his life). Would shipping lists have appeared in the Newcastle Chronicle? I'm very grateful that you can even possibly look up anything to do with my Coweys. |hug|
Cheers heaps,
Summer.

Hi Wilkes_ml I had a look to day regarding John Thomas Stott and the only thing I came up with at North Shields library was an orbituary which was
"STOTT - At 44 Seymour street, North shields, on the 13/12/1909 aged 52, John Thomas William dearly beloved husband of Jane Ann Stott, Interment will be announced later" I don't think this is your John but I thought it might be of intrest I will have a look at Newcastle evening Chronicle & Tyne & Wear Archieves but it may be a couple of weeks and I might find an article about him.

Hello Genewizard,

Thank you so much for all the work you went through copying out the details of Henry Brown and John Scott from the Tyne Sailing Ships 1830-1930. I should have realized that with the name of John Scott that there would be many entries. You ended up with a huge task. This gives me a lot of details I can work with to try to narrow things down.
Thanks so much for your help.

Hi John it was no problem, there are other John Scotts as well but they had middle names so I could rule them out, the book had a list of all the owners and masters when they sunk and the size of the ships in, if you want that information I can get that for you as well. There are large family files in the library on the brown and Scott families if you want me to look through them for you, but I will need a few more details and names etc.

Hello Genewizard

I have two ancestors who were master mariners in the Tynemouth area. They are John Scott (b. North Shields abt 1812) and Henry Brown (b. North Shields abt 1801). Both are shown in Ward's Northumberland and Durham 1850 Directory as being ship owners. Hi Genewizard,
Do you still have this book? I also have 2 mariners in my family and was wondering if you wouldn't mind a lookup to see if there's anything listed? My mariners are:
Robert Cowey, Master Mariner C15759 (born 12th Oct 1835 in Howden), and his grandfather,
James Cowey (not sure if he was a master mariner? listed as Mariner on his son George's marriage cert), not sure of his birth year but his son George was born around 1805, so James may not even be included in the date range of the book. I assume his birth year to be around 1775 plus/minus 10years??
Any help is greatly appreciated!!
Cheers,
Summer.

Hi again Genewizzard.

It was so kind of you to do the look-ups for me and then to offer to check the records of the Brown and Scott families in the library as well. I would like to take you up on the offer. Further details are:

Scott family - John Scott (b. abt 1812, Preston) married Harriet Laing (b. abt 1812, North Shields) in 1833. Children - Jane Ann, b. 1836, John (my ggrandfather) b. 1837, Harriet, b. 1839, Joseph McGlashan, b. 1841, William R. b. 1852. Based on census records they resided 11 Spring Terrace, Preston around 1850 and later at Alma St. Newcastle. John Scott was a master mariner and in Ward's Directory 1850 is shown as a ship owner.
Brown family - Henry Brown (b. 1801, North Shields) married Isabella Scott (b. 1807, Tynemouth) in 1834. Children - Francis Dale, b. 1834, Isabella Barbara, (she married my ggrandfather John Scott) b. 1837, Mary Catherine, b. 1841, Harriet Josephine, b. 1843, Joseph Walter Scott, b. 1847. Based on census records they resided at Sidney St. Tynemouth during 1840 - 1855, then were at 7 Walker Place. Henry Brown was a master mariner and is a ship owner in the 1850 Ward Directory. I believe his father was named Henry as well so the first entry for the Atlas seems a possibility.

I don't have much else on them. I would very much like to find out more about the ships. But the problem might be to determine which ship(s) particularly for the John Scott entries which are so numerous.

Any information you find would be so helpful and very much appreciated.

Thank you so much for your help.

John

Hi Genewizard

If you are still offering help to people with Newcastle interests, I would like to ask please.

I am in Australia so it is difficult for me, my grandmother was from Newcastle originally.

I am trying to find out more info (newpapers perhaps) on the drowning of my great uncle Robert DRYDEN on 25.7.1926 in Leazes Lake.

Also any info on my Great Grandfather Thomas Lee DRYDEN who was half of an song and dance duo called "Tot and Feaney" with Albert Feaney.

I have more but understand how time consuming this can be.

Any help would be apprecited.

Neil

Hi i just thought that I would offer my services and let people know that if they want anything looked up from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle/Journal I often go into Newcastle Civic centre where the Family history dept is at the moment and I am willing to look things up for people also North shields Library has a good collection of family history information so if your ancestors came from what is now North tyneside i.e Wallsend,WhitleyBay,North Shields, Tynemouth etc I will have a look for you. I go to North Shields Library about once every 2 weeks to look for my own family tree so it is no problem to help someone else.|cheers|

Hi genewizard!

I know that it is some time since you posted your offer to help but hopefully it's not too late!

I have just found one of my ancestors (William Miller) who is stated in the 1861 census as being a captain of a steam tug in Tyneside.

I have no idea of where to start looking for who he might have been working for or which steam tug he operated. If you have any advice I would much appreciate it. We are planning a trip to the North East next year, partly as one of my husband's nephews is studying at Newcastle but mainly as I believe the beaches are so stunningly beautiful!

If you could direct me where I would be best researching for this info I would appreciate it - time will most likely be limited!

Many thanks

Rubina

Hi John I searched North Shields Library today but couldn't find anything for John Telford however if you can provide a rough date of death I will have a look at the Newcastle Evening Chronicle and Journals for that period.

He died on the 12 Nov 1945, apparently his plane crashed on the way home from the war he is buried in Tripoli.

Dear Genewizard, I have been trying to get some help in Newcastle for some time. My ancestor John Oyston was born 24 May 1819 (inscription on headstone) in Newcastle-on-Tyne, but he was said to be a native of South Sheilds in convict records. Although he appeared in court as early as 01 Jan 1834, it was his conviction of larceny at the Newcastle Assizes in 1836 that saw him transported for 7 years to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania). I have been unsuccessful in finding his roots in Northumberland/Durham and would welcome any help. Many thanks in anticipation, Chris Oyston

Hi Genewizard
I have recently acquired 3 family photo albumns, one with postcard photos only. On the back of many are dates and addresses of family, both to and from family members. My question is, is there a telephone book for the Ashington, Newbiggin and Morpeth area for the 1940's. Or another means of tracking a family down to a specific address in a given year?

If your very kind offer of look ups in the Newcastle Evening Chronicle is still open I would be most grateful if you could please look for an obituary for my GGrandfather, JOHN CAMERON PROCTOR, who died 29 November 1901. I believe an obituary was published and I would very much like to know the wording.

Many thanks.

Vivian

How very kind of you. I can see that you have had several enquiries, so I hope you haven't been too snowed under with requests. I have a question you may be able to answer. I have Mark Holland, born March 15th 1902 Byker. Sometime between then and April 1908 he and his family moved to Rochdale, Lancashire. My problem is that although Mark's birth was registered with the surname Holland, I believe he was raised as Mark Tetlow, son of Joseph tetlow and Clara nee Weedall. All other avenues of enquiry have proved dead ends (no definate date in March 1902 for Mark Tetlow birth, no registration of Mark Tetlow birth, no family knowledge of Holland/Tetlow, etc) so I was wondering if perhaps Mark attended a school in Byker under either the surname Holland or Tetlow. Might the archive centre have any school records, do you know? I have family census entries 1901 under Holland and 1911 under Tetlow, but can't prove they are the same family. Many thanks for your time - Pam

if your kind offer still exits i am trying to find anything out about James Fenwick who fought in the great war with the Royal Northumberland fusiliers and in 1918 whilst with the 2nd battalion was awarded the military medal. From Cullercoats he was a signaller and would love to find out more about either his award or a photo if it appears in the local paper. should have occured between September and October 1918. cheers
