I have posted an enquiry in the forum specializing in County Wexford - looking for a person in the mid 19th century. This is the first time my researches have taken me to Ireland, and I would be grateful for general advice about how to proceed with such a search. As the person I am researching was a captain in the Royal Navy, I would have thought that might help me find him and his forebears.

www.
genealogylinks.net and homepage.eircom.net/wexford

There is also genuki.org.uk. Tough to find records as most burned in the uprisings, that's why 1901/1911 census released early. Have you tried the TNA under Royal Navy Officers list? That is the national archives.

Thanks for your reply Vanessa. Since I wrote I have done a more thorough Google search, and think I have the person I'm looking for, though I would have liked to find out about his family in Ireland. However, as you say, surviving records are thin on the ground!
Best wishes IAN
