I have recently received a record from the old parochial reg. concerning my ggggrandfather james bensons marriage to jane armstrong 1850 coatbridge. I would like to know if there would have been a licence as well, this is my first attempt at finding my scottish ancesters and I am struggling a bit.
I would love to know if James had any brothers or sisters and who his parents were. He was born around 1829 but am not sure where other than scotland. He and Jane moved down to england (staffordshire) sometime in the 1860s.
Incidentally it says he was married by a minister of the free church. I don't know what this is can any one help?
