im looking for my family history , i know my great great grandmother was born in llanover in i think you pronounce it abergovenny? she was born in 1912 and her name was mary margaret macdowell who later married a john edward phillips they moved to the west midlands and had 10 children if anyone can help as im fairly new to tracing my family please and thankyou|help|

I have had a quick look and the only birth registration I can see in 1912 is this one

Mary M McDowall, 1912 Q4 Mother's Maiden Name Leith, Registered in Brecknock, Powys, Vol 11b Page No 123

Now Abergavenny? is in Monmouthshire - I think - so the above registration is not in the right district.

You really need your Great Grandmothers birth certificate and that way you can see what her Mother's maiden name was. That will help you decide if the above registrration is the correct one. You need to work backwards.

In case it becomes relevant a Margaret Leith married a John Mcdowall in 1912 - in Brecknock registration district again though Q 1 (Volume: 11b Page: 103)

OK let's get this clear, Abergavenny is just a mile or so from the boundary with what was called Breconshire or Brecknockshire. Technically it would have been possible to be born in Abergavenny and registered in Breconshire/brecknockshire.

The boundary in that area moved several times so don't be put off by the registration district being "wrong" it isn't wrong it is just not what you expected.
