Hi Stonewall,

There appear to be 3 families of SANDELLs in the 1901 census of Stoke Newington. One family is that of James W SANDELL, aged 39, a Train Driver, born Burnham Market, Norfolk and his wife Louisa J, aged 29, born Chalk Farm, London with their children Charles F aged 5, Hilda F aged 2 and Grace aged 1. The family was living at 15 Summerhouse Rd.

Another is that of an Alfred J SANDELL, aged 33, a Builders Scaffolder, born Paddington, London and his wife Rosa, aged 30, born Hammersmith with their children William aged 8, George aged 7, Alfred aged 6, James aged 4 and Thomas aged 1. The family was living at 17 Watson St.

The third is that of an Annie SANDELL, aged 71, a widow, born Clerkenwell and her daughters Emmeline, aged 32, an unmarried Ostrich Feather Curler, born Highgate and Lillie MANSELL, aged 28, a widowed Masonic Tassel Maker, born Islington. They are living at 39 Trinity Square.

Do any of the above names ring a bell with your friend?? Unless she starts tracing backwards from what she does already know, via marriage certificates, birth certificates, etc., it is almost impossible to know from which family she is descended.

HTH

Births of the children of James W and Louise J, you need to get at least one of these to give you mothers name, I suspect it would be Louise J Few that you are looking for....

Births Mar 1899
Sandell Hilda Florence Hackney 1b 440

Births Mar 1900
Sandell Grace Hackney 1b 438

Births Jun 1895
Sandell Charles Frederick Holborn 1b 769

or have you already got one of these......

FreeBMD
A search for a marriage for Grace on FreeBMD comes up with 2 marriages for a Grace Sandell you can disregard the first as you have her birth year of 1900 it would make her only 12 years old.
The name in bold is the spouse.

Marriages Sep 1912
Sandell Grace E Newton Docking 4b 656

Marriages Jun 1921
Sandell Grace L Matthews Bristol 6a 140

This is the marriage for Hilda Sandall
Marriages Sep 1925
Sandell Hilda Luckey Edmonton 3a 1486

I have also found someone else has a Family Tree on Ancestry with the Family is it yours.

Louise Few's father is Henry b 1837 Newbury, Berkshire.

Have you got a copy of the birth cert or are you looking for one.

If you are going by the Census which tells you she was born Chalk Farm this might not be the truth, people made it up as they went along, and depending on who filled in the forms.

I could only find the Newbury Birth when I was looking for you last week. I'd go with this one as her father came from there as well.

On your copy of the birth cert. what is the Registration District at the top it should be Berkshire or Newbury.
