I have a major brickwall trying to find out about the Ireland connection of my OH's 2xggrandfather John QUINN. He appears in the 1851 census in Manchester, HO107 2231/128 Page 31 in Allan(?) Street, All Saints district:
John QUINN, Head, Mar, ? Car Driver born Ireland
Sarah QUINN, Wife, Mar, ?, Domestic Duties, born Ireland
Rose Ann QUINN, Dau, Unm, 16?, ? born Ireland
John QUINN, Son, 11, born Ireland
Eliza Jane QUINN, Dau 9?, born Ireland
James? QUINN Son, 8, born Ireland
Charles QUINN, Son, 5, born Ireland
William QUINN, Son, 1, born Ireland
I can't find any of the family in 1861 and have searched every way I can think of including trawling districts of the census. Daughter Rose Ann married Michael GLYNN in 1859 but can't find them either!
In 1863 there is a mention in Slater's Manchester Directory of John QUINN, coachman living at 7 Richmond Street, Chorlton cum Medlock, but in the 1861 census the address is occupied by John HUGHES (RG9 2945/36 Page 34) - it could be him and I have also searched in this area but no luck.
In 1871 some of the family turn up again at 1 Love Street, New Cross, Manchester (RG10 4032/43 Page 24):
Rosanna GLYNN, Head, Mar, 30, Silk Winder born Ireland
Eliza Jane GLYNN, Dau, 10, Scholar, born Manchester
John QUINN, Father, Widower, 60, Coachman, born Ireland
Charles QUINN, Son, Unm, 21, Tailor born Ireland
William QUINN is a Vault Manager on Oldham Road, Manchester (RG10 4047/79 Page 1) and says he was born in Failsworth
No convincing sign of John (c1840), Eliza Jane (c1844) or James (c1846).
Later Censuses:
Rose GLYNN 1881 - RG11 3987/4 Page 3 - no sign after this
Charles QUINN 1881 - RG11 3928/11 Page 15 - no sign after this
William QUINN 1881 - RG11 3999/9 Page 12
" " 1891 - RG12 3269/24 Page 41
" " 1901 - RG13 3814/8 Page 8
Family story has it that the family were from Dublin - but also that William (1850) had visited and it was a rural area!
So, my questions:
1. Where are they in 1861? |banghead|
2. William (1850) seems convinced he was born in Manchester - could this be true and is there a convincing birth for him?
3. What happened to Sarah, John, Eliza Jane and James after 1851?
4. Any of the others in any missing censuses!!
Anyone any ideas how I can get more information about this family!!?
Sorry about the long post but I didn't want to waste anyone's time doing lookups when I already had the information. :D
Thanks
