Good afternoon from Mexico. Having looked for SINGLEHURST, and followed thro ROSLING, I am stuck beyond my great-grandfather (JOHN ROACH) who married MARIA LOUISA ALLEN in Sep 1874.

I have a similar problem with my paternal grandmother, having started again with SINGLEHURST, and trying to find her background under the name of MARY E McCARTHY. My only memory, from my long deceased mother, was that her family came from Ireland, and the family was known as the "Fighting McCarthy's".

I appreciate that I can fing more info thro copies of Marriage Certs but, being in Mexico and its mail problems, I just wonder if anyone can throw some light on this search.

Thanks a lot

Bill

The birth of this John Robert Roach (as is his name in the above marriage reg) was registered in June Qtr 1852 Newington Reg Dist Vol 1d Page 197. However, I have been unable to determine his parents from the 1861 & 1871 census, probably due to the multiple mistranscriptions of this and similar names. I thought I had them listed as Rock, but that turned out to be genuinely Rock.

I will keep looking.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your interest. I have had the same problems with John Robert Roach before his marriage in 1874. I believe I will have to get the Marriage Cert to find the names of their parents. I did a "guess" search, by assumed birth date spans and found a Birth for a Maria Louisa Allen in Mar 1855 and a Marriage in Jun 1852 at the same registry location of an Alfred Allen and Eliza Blomfield. But this is a lot of supposition. Your experienced comments would be appreciated.

Hi Kim,

Thank you also. On John & Maria, I have their 1891 census stuff & their wedding in Sep 1874. Please see my response to Michael. SINGLEHURST is my family name and ROSLING is my mother's family name.

"Supposition" can be a problem. In certain instances one must make a supposition with a view to following it up with sound research in order to verify or negate such supposition. However you can 'get lucky' but that is only when the supposition is proven!!
In view of the lack of evidential census information, there is no doubt that the best method of verifying John Robert's parents is to obtain the marriage certificate, which will name the father.
Obtaining the birth certificate is not a logical option at this stage as there is more that one possibility. Note: The birth reg that I quoted before (June Qtr 1852 Newington Reg Dist Vol 1d Page 197) is in fact for a John Robert George Roach - could well be the wrong one. I suspect that I should have said March Qtr 1854 Stepney Reg Dist Vol 1c Page 514, for John Robert Roach. The age on the marriage cert should hopefully clarify that.

Once you have that information you will have a better chance of locating the family on the census.

Good Luck:)

Just a thought, I also have Roachs in my family (that sounds awful, doesn't it?) Anyway, another variable on the spelling that they ended up using (even on the birth certs) was Roche. Drove me nuts until I found it, because it's spelled Roach on the grave stone. One never knows!

Teri

Thanks for your info. I too have heard of the use of that spelling, but I am not getting very far with either.
