Trying to find information on John Ashworth , 1813 - 1875
He was born Rochdale Lancashire - a very famous man for that time , he was a master painter , preacher & author ( Strange Tales , Walks in Canaan etc) he also had a book written about him , Life & Labours of John Ashworth written by A.L Calman.
John was the man responsible for opening the Chapel for the Destitute , he visited Palestine (The Holy Land).
John I believe was married twice , first to a Jane Thornber , they had a son Felix whom died aboout 1861 , also a son Harold born abt 1838 , a daughter Mary J , John also married a lady called Hannah (nee Wood).
I am also interested in Harold whom seems to dissapear after the 1861 census untill about 1894.
Harold married a lady called Mary Brealey/Brierley , they had a daughter called Laura Maria 1859 a very modern name for the time.
There are very few Harold's born for that time as is Laura rare for the time , I have them in 1861 together as a family with a James Brealey whom I assume is Mary's brother.
After this census they cannot be found as 'ASHWORTHS' in the 1871 1881 1891 , Harold seems to reappear in the 1901 this time living with Sowerbys , listed as widowed with 2 young children , Harold & Lilly ( 6 & 4 ) Harold is also listed as an artistic decorator which makes sense in view of his father (John) being a master painter
Any help with this family appreciated , maybe they went overseas , is James still around after the 1861 .
Heres hoping my brick wall will come down

On the 1901 census Harold is listed as 'House Painter' not artistic painter, or was that a listing in a directory.

Class: RG13; Piece: 3699; Folio: 73; Page: 21

............Right he is listed as Artistic Decorator (paint) on the 1861

I too have been trawling the census and BMD's from 1861 to 1901 without any success other than to clarify things in my mind.
In the 1861 I think Harold was possibly trying to live up to his father's reputation with his job description as 'artistic decorator' with the addition of 'paint' next to it.
In the 1901 he is definitely down as house painter and living with Frank Sowerby who is a corporation sweeper.
Harold's two children, Lily 4 and Harold 6 must have been born to a second wife as the first one, Mary Jane Brearley would have been 56/57 when young Harold was born.
But looking for a marriage for a Harold Ashworth and births of Harold and Lilly in Lancashire in the 1890's throws up so many possibilities. In fact the Rochdale/Manchester area seems to be awash with the names Harold, Mary, Lilly, Laura Maria and Ashworth combined.
So apart from a birth reg for Laura Maria in Dec 1/4 1858 and a marriage reg for Harold and Mary Jane in March 1/4 1858 I found nothing to help you at all re Harold. Sorry.|banghead|
