Can anyone tell me the best place to start looking for an obituary in the East London area . I have a Charles Frances Venables born in england in 1879, emigrated to South Africa after 1900, and died in East London in 1932.
Any help would be appreciated.

...emigrated to South Africa after 1900, and died in East London in 1932

Is that the East London in, er, London or the East London in South Africa?

It's the one in South Africa - i've asked the moderator to move it back to the South Africa section.

The National Archives of South Africa on-line catalogue lists estate papers for a Francis Charles Venables dated 1932 which is probably your man. The estate papers can be quite useful, especially if they include the death notice. Sadly it is housed at the Cape Archives in Cape Town, where they have banned digital cameras, so you will either have to use a local researcher (PM me if you want some contacts) or wait a while for the official copying service.

If you go to http://www.national.archives.gov.za/ and type Charles and Venables into the Search box you will get several hits.

They have local South African newspapers at the BL Newspaper Library in Colindale, London (UK ;)) You might get lucky with an obituary
