Hi,
This site sure does have some helpful forums, hope this one can help me.
I am trying to find a birth records for my great grand father Alexander Patterson. I found the family on the 1901 Census which lists his place of birth as Madras, India...he would have been born around 1854. I have no idea who his parents are although I am assuming they were stationed in India either in the military or with the civil service of some kind.
It is possible his father was army , sons usually followed in their father's footsteps then and Alexander was in the Army when he was stationed in Cumberland...my grand mother was born in Carlisle!
I have tried the LDS site, the catalog, did a name search there as well as checking out any India sites I could find...nothing popped out and hit me between the eyes.|banghead|
Any further help would be greatly appreciated:)
Thanks,
Ann

What other clues exist to help try and point you in the right direction...........
What was Alexander's occupation in 1901?
Where was he living?
Where was his wife born?
Do you have a birth certificate for one of his children which gives his mother's name and maiden name? (This may help you to look for his marriage certificate which should record his dad's name and occupation - Alexander's occupation may also be informative).
Have you traced Alexander's army service record?

Hi Geoffers,
I have his occupation in 1901 as "Overseer of Telegraph Managers" and then in the next column it has Civ. M listed ????
His wife was listed as Harriet age 35 born in Middlesex...Hounslow. In checking out the children I found that one had a middle name of Barlow...I did a search with that as Harriet's last name and did come up with some info...birth date is right but have no way of knowing if it is indeed she, if it is she was with her grand mother at the time. I am waiting for a birth certificate to come for Nora...my grand mother.
I found that in the 1891 Census he was in Cumberland and was listed as "Army Bandsman"...this is where I have the first indication of my grand mother who is 2 at the time. It even gives an address of St. Cuthbert Without, Cumberland!
Not sure how I go about doing a check on his service record though, would appreciate a tip or two:D
Hopefully the BC of my grandma will shed some more light.
Thank you very much,
Ann

LDS have a list of microfilm nos for the Madras Presidency then select 1854 and view births, marriages and deaths at a LDS Family history centre.

Hey No 1 Lady I am so glad someone else is having the same problem I am experiencing!
My great grandfather was a Major Surgeon in the British Army - posted to India - and his children all seem to have been born in and around the Lucknow area......... have found them all (well most of them) except one of my grandfather's sisters who remains an enigma..... no birth record and no marriage record (in England by then) and, thus no death record cos can't look for that if I don't know her married name..... According to the 1891 and 1901 censuses she was born in Newport Mon - WRONG - they have checked all their records and no trace of her. Not surprised cos her sister is down as born in Bradford, York and was actually born in India..... was their some sort of stigma about being born overseas at that time???? the boys all have their birth place as India........... If she wasn't on the two censuses I would think she didn't exist!
If you hit gold please let me know so I can put this baby to bed!

If you haven't already done so, why not create a new thread with some details and someone may be able to come up a suggestion to help you?
