Why do they do it?

Take a perfectly good, useable website & tinker with it?

I'm talking about the Western Morning News website. It's my morning ritual, I sit with a cup of tea & read the headlines & then check the BMDs.

For the past few weeks I noticed that the West Briton/Cornishman site had a new look but there was a link to the BMDs still.

This morning I click on my bookmark & get a new look WMN website. No link to the BMDs, no mention of it on the sitemap. Just a link to the external website where the Death & Memoriam notices are now shown.

I'm not a morning person & this morning hasn't been helped by the disruption to my ritual. Well the WMN does ask for website comments & they've got them now|soapbox|

It's supposed to be `progress' Sue, but in my book, it never is! I believe in `simple', anything that is difficult to follow, I usually leave well alone, unless it is something vital that I need to know.

Just noticed you've passed your millenium....sorry if it's been mentioned before.

Congratulations!!

Hope that's cheered you up a bit. :)

I don't normally notice, but for some reason it caught my eye. Hope you enjoy the rest of the day. :)

I will do. Off out to the garden soon. The second day of sunshine, I think summer has finally arrived & I'm making the most of it before it ends (probably by the end of the week :D)

there is an old motto

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT

I do wish more people would take notice. My particular moan is those TV companies that take a perfectly good book and turn it into a production that bears little resemblance to the original. I used to spit feathers when watching Cadfael or Morse having read all the books.

So true Eileen! How old is Lewis in the TV adaptation of the Morse books? Certainly nothing like the Lewis in the books.
My own personal terrible adaptation - the Lord of The Rings films! Yes, I am sure they were all very clever ( I have only seen the first one - that was enough!), but to miss out huge (vital) chunks of the books really cheesed me off!

Tinkering with websites gives somebody (who is doubtless being paid a lot of cash) something to do and allows them to show off their "impressive" skills!
When it comes to websites, my personal hate is flash. There really is no need for flash on most websites (a few perhaps - with trailers for films, or with regular animated cartoons etc), but the number of folks who use flash - purely because they can - annoys me to the point of never visiting such sites again. Likewise, excessive (and totally unrelated) advertising, music (midi muzak is not good people!) etc etc.
Thank goodness that in the main people have stopped using that diabolical horror of yesteryear - the "marquee" tag! That was where text scrolled annoyingly across the screen - I hate things moving on my screen! No sliding about, no dancing, no zipping across or whizzing away to a corner; all are annoying!
If any web developers are reading this - Stoppit!!!!!

Now look what you have done Sue - I was in a good mood before I started this post! :D

Small and subtle is not so bad Peter - it is those sites where everything zooms around which drive me mad!
When my girls were learning html about the age of 6 or 7, they wanted things zooming across the screen, firework displays, bouncy balls, strange colours and outlandish fonts. I still have their efforts on a disk somewhere here - but now they tend to be much more restrained. Still not quite enough for my tastes - but then I am not 19 years old (sorry to spoil anyones illusions if they thought I was a teenager :D )

Edit: Ah - the updates and additions Peter ;) Until I allowed it via my script blocker, I was wondering where the scrolly bit was!

I off now to put one on to my site :D
I remember the old days before windows when you could make a menu screen with scrolling text, mine normally said something like don't touch or else .....
I have changed the layout of one of my sites a number of times, trying to get what I wanted with the menu display, but never left out pages or links or renamed pages which I find annoying. I have found the design I intended and leaving alone now.
P.S. It isn't the site on my signature |hug|

I take it you haven't seen the website for Looe Martime Archives - a nightmare for anyone like me who uses flashblock. A pity because there is some great content on the site when you eventually get to it.

I do apologise for ruining your mood though.

Tonight its the 2 genealogy sites I use the most for research... A**** and GR.
Has no one told them to leave well enough alone? Both sites are soooooooooo slow I could have made tea and drank the pot before either of them came up on the screen..then to try to find any information. A*** invites you to try their near search....DO NOT, unless you want your nails to dry and another pot of tea.... When I typed in the relative in question thinking I would get much closer to who I want from the details they ask and the statement they make.. I got over 818,000 choices.....NO, I DID NOT CHECK THEM ALL OUT!! --I logged off instead.
GR also had some new stuff at the start of their pages and was extremely slow and when I typed a reply to a message the letters shook.|rant||rant|
Please everyone..'if it ain't broke don't fix it'

Thankyou,, I know you all understand:D

I agree about the A******y site- it's making me looney, every time they tinker with it I just want to grab someone and shake them. It used to be so easy to navigate. And that new search --- I won't say what I really think. It's one of the reasons I have their account month to month. Just needed to vent. I will say (and I have said this to my husband) that I think B-G forums is a very well thought out site - there is so much info here and it is so easy to work thru. I am going to get my sister on it (she's in New Hampshire) if it's the last thing I do.

Keep up the good work and please leave the tinkering to other, less intelligent sites! :)

I have just taken my first look at the new search facility for the "A-team's" site.

It is different and will need a little time to become familiar but first impressions are favourable.

For myself, I had never really enjoyed their previous version, especially when wanting to conduct wildcard and area searches in just one specific field.

I will be trying it out again later today, time will tell.
