On 1901 Census, I believe an ancestor of mine Thomas Harrison (b 1875) was a publican living at 60 Green Street, Bristol. I've googled the address and come up with the New Found Out. Does anyone know if this pub had a previous name and any information on previous publicans. |help|

Thanks Jill - got all excited there but the one in question gives a different name as landlord. Wonder if they were just lodging there. On the Census, it doesn't give the pub name, only the address and that he is a publican. His family and some visitors are with him.
Anyway -many thanks - it's amazing what websites exist!

I tried that link (out of curiosity - I like old pub history) |cheers| and couldn't get anywhere with their search engine looking for New Found Out. Searched for Totterdown, and:

NEW FOUND OUT Green Street, Totterdown
1876 - 78. Frederick Woodcock / 1882 - 87. George Snow / 1888. Robert Thomas / 1889 - 91. John Hiram
1892. William Davis / 1899 - 1901. Miss. M. Leader / 1904. Mary Rowsell / 1909 - 37. Frederick Churchill
1938. Susan Churchill / 1944. Frederick Groves / 1950 - 53. William Seager / 1975. Z. Da- Scossa
the New Found Out was previously named the Builders’ Arms

Just thought I would let you know in case you had the same problem. :)

Thanks for your reply - he doesn't seem to be there - so I don't know what to make of it. Maybe he was just living there.

Hi Lorraine

It says in the 1901 census "Publican" "own account", so that is a fairly definite "yes" to the question "was he the publican?"

If you look at the list of the Licencees, there are gaps eg between 1878 and 1882, and between 1901 & 1904, and others. The list has probably been compiled from local directories and the like, with not all years covered. Therefore it is conceivable that your Thomas could have filled the gap between 1901 & 1904.
Just an idea.

Hi there, the pub is still there, here is a pic http://www.britishpubguide.com/cgi-bin/pub.cgi?results:Bristol:454

In fact its about 10 minutes walk from my home. One evening we were walking by and we were lured inside because we heard the Cure being played on the juke box (or whatever they are called now). The pub is very small, like sitting in my living room. The music changed later on to Ska, and I found myself sitting next to a pit bull terrier who wanted my packet of crisps.

There were some strange, but friendly customers. (they may well have thought the same of us !)

Anyway, we always intended to go back, but haven't yet.

Thanks for the photo link. Very interesting bit of info about the pub. Now I've found it, I feel like going myself but Bristol is not a place I've ever been. Strange really that he became a publican - doesn't fit with the rest of the family.
Anyway thanks again

Sorry I haven't got back to you sooner - Yes - might be a bit far but I've travelled distances to traul through graveyards - so why not! Maybe one day if I'm in that area.
