I have been reliably in formed by the friend i am researching for that her mother married someone who was in the RAF; This is according to a wedding photo she has. She tells me there are no markings, badges, insignia at all on this uniform; She was told by her mother he was raf; His name was Cyril Caplin/caplen but i have now entered that name in many different sites to find personnel in raf ww2 and nothing comes up. He was born in e'ssex possbly the chingford area abt 1915 !!!??? He married Sylvia Walker in 1940 but the marriage did not last; This is all i have at present. Anything you have on this man or family i would be interested to know.

If you could get a copy of the photo, crop it down a bit to show the gent in question , we could probably help with the uniform. If you can get a copy, use something like photobucket to upload the photo to, then use the tool there to link to this forum. If you are not sure how to do that, there is a sticky thread in the Useful Information forum which explains it.

At that time, the uniform would have had the shoulder flashes on it (vulture or eagle, I can't remember what it was). So that is one identifier. Others will be rank and trade badges.
Post the photo and we will try and help.

I take it from what you say that you, or your friend, do not have the marriage certificate. Birth, marriage and death certificates are key documents in genealogy and can't be ignored. I would suggest that you or your friend gets hold of a copy. The occupation shown on the certificate may answer one of your questions.

I will have to speak to the person who owns the picture of which i now have a copy. the uniform according to my husband looks like a scottish reg; with no badges or flashes and diferent colour 'trews' (no kilt). Every male on the photo apart from the groom is in a suit; So this suggests a uniform of a kind ... will get back after talking to my friend'

Peter (Goodey) has hit the nail on the head. The GRO Index shows a marriage for Cyril M Caplen to Sylvia Walker in the June Quarter of 1940 registered at Epping volume 4a, page 1402. Could be Epping for any reason, but it is a stone's throw from RAF North Weald. The certificate should give Cyril's Father's name and as Peter said, Cyril's occupation.
There is GRO Index birth entry for a Cyril Caplan in the December Quarter 1914 for Norwich volume 4b page 184. This Cyril's Mother's maiden name was MIller. Can't, as yet, find a Caplan/Miller marriage.

Thank you for your help. Procat If the certificate does not help i will try your way and send it to you. I have now had authority from my friend to order the cert and we are keeping our fingers crossed. We are certain however it is not RAF as there are no shoulder flashes or insignia anywhere to be seen.
I used to work for the RAF while we were in Germany when my husband was stationed there, so I know the uniform quite well, it was just that this was the second world war and i was not sure whether there had been any changes. Will let you all know when the cert has arrived and if it tells us what we need to know. Thank you all again.-- eise
