Hi,
I'm on the trail of Isaac Martin (1822-Abt.1875).
He was shown on the 1871 Census as living in Somerton (Som) and in receipt of a "Greenwich Pension". I understand this was a naval pension for NOn-comisioned officers. DOes anyone know of a source to search the pension records on-line?

You might find this useful reading -
http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=41
And, no, there is no way to access the records online.

Thanks for the link Peter.
It looks like the information I'm seeking might be available in the National Archives. I assume you have to make an appointment to visit Kew to inspect these documents -- I haven't had the chance to read through the site information pages yet to note the exact procedure.
I'm still very new to this; have any other members of the forum had any experience of dealing with the National Archives and thereby have any tips to pass on?

Having traced a couple of dozen Naval histories at TNA, you will find the records there. Locating the relevant information depends to a large extent on when he joined the RN. It is easiest if he joined from 1853 onwards

No, you need a reader's ticket - these can be obtained at TNA. Check their website for details of what docuemntation they now require you to bring with you.

Put the kettle on, make a cuppa and browse the site, there's a lot of information there to assist you.

Pepare before hand - make notes as to exactly what you know and want to locate. There are the normal rules about what you may/may not do in record offices.
