My gr gr grandmother, Jane Fox HURLEY, had 2 sisters, Matilda & Eleanor, who were living with her and their father and brother near Bristol in the 1841 census (HO107 / 377/11 f 69 p 20).

Matilda Fox HURLEY married Edward Douglas DUGGINS at St Leonard's Shoreditch on 21/11/1842 (Shoreditch Dec 1842 Vol 2 p 360). Matilda & Edward DUGGINS and Eleanor HURLEY do not seem to appear again in UK BMD or census returns.

I have found some intriguing hints on Arbitrary.com (eg on list of New World Immigrants Vol 1) but our subscription to Arbitrary does not cover world-wide. Although Matilda and Eleanor are not in my direct line, their names were carried down to people I knew and I should be most interested to know where they went. It would be of particular interest to know where they said they were born, if that is recorded in US or other censuses.

Hi John,

Sorry that no one has been able to answer your questions.

I spent some time searching US records to no avail. Your Edward and Matilda do not show up here, neither on census records nor passenger lists.

A search of Ancestry.com shows a number of Edward Duggins in various Censuses for England, including ones with birth years that would be likely for Edward. Unfortunately, I don't subscribe to those records and cannot see the images.

Wishing you the best of luck in your search,

Deb

Thank you very much for looking, Deb.

I'm fairly sure that Edward & Matilda left these shores before 1851, as I cannot find them again here, either in censuses or on BMD indexes. I thought it might have been to the US because of some possible matches I saw on Arbitrary.com - but we don't subscribe to the US records, so couldn't see the images. Perhaps I need to widen my search to other territories.

Thanks for the suggestion, Anne. I think I looked at one or two like this before and concluded that it probably wasn't my family. The truth is I don't know where Matilda and Eleanor were born but Jane, my direct ancestor, always stated Hereford. Her father, Richard, was born in Bristol and so I'd always assumed, perhaps rashly, that all the family came from that part of the world. It's true that Matilda married in London but that was the first and only London connection I've been convinced by.

Also, both Matilda and Jane had the middle name Fox, which appeared in their marriage records; I guess that Eleanor, who seems to be the middle sister, would probably have shown the same feature.
