Charles Moseby (or Mosby, Mosbey, or Moseley) had been hotel keeping |5cups| on the roads to the goldfields in Victoria, but disappeared in about 1862.

His daughter Deborah died in Melbourne in 1943, aged 92. Her death certificate states that she had married Lewis THOMAS in New Zealand about 1872, and we presume she was there with her father.

Is anyone able to help with a death date for Charles, or any information about where he was living?

Best wishes,

Lenore

Thank you Chisel. No, I was hoping someone would give me the hint as to their whereabouts. :(

BUT, someone might just pay for the marriage certificate, and that would help. I'll see what happens.

Best wishes,

Lenore

Deborah and Lewis were married in Westport on January 24, 1872.

The witnesses do not appear to be related to either of them.
Howard Balston and May or Mary Hall, both of Westport.

Lewis is listed as a 38 year old Miner, Batchelor.
Deborah is listed as a 23 year old spinster.

Hi Ralph,

Reference to Wikipedia reveals that there was a bit of a goldrush to Westport in 1861, and I imagine that a new rush would have been attractive to Moseby.

I note also that the Buller District Council has the burial registers for the Westport Cemetery in its office. I wonder if they have an index to the register? It is possible that Moseby is buried there.

Hi,

registration number of Thomas-Mosbey 1872 is #0672.

There is also the death of a Thomas Lewis at Grey River Hospital, Greymouth on 28 April 1903, native of greymouth and late of Barry Town, aged 28 years.
Grey River Argus 30/4/1903. Could be eldest son or a nephew???
A Mr and Mrs Lewis arrived in Greymouth from Westport on the "Charles Edward" . Grey River Argus vol 12 issue 1403 29 jan 1873

Also a family of a Henry J Lewis lived in Ahaura some 30 km from Greymouth at that time.

Cheers
