William Hawkins, not yet 13 years of age stole a canvas bag containing 230 guineas from a gentleman on board the ship 'Prince' and in view of his young age was only sentenced to 7 years transportation. (Reported October 9th 1790 - sentenced the previous Tuesday). The sessions were in the County of Hants for this boy.

Hi

The William Hawkins on the Third Fleet was sentenced for 7 years at Southampton (5th Oct 1790 per A*****) per the Third Fleet site http://members.pcug.org.au/~pdownes/dps/3rdflt.txt

It is possible that the Southhampton azzizes records will give further info about where William was from.

The A*** records are teh convict indents so that William Hawkins supposedly arrived.

Have you any details on him in Australia eg children marriage etc which may give details about where he was born. With Hawkins being a not uncommon name Cornmwall seems a fair distance from Southampton, not impossible but....

thank you both for info. know nothing about him!! on the igi site someone has submitted william hawkins born cornwall b 1740 in cornwall and added a link to the bottom of his page, with the third fleet page. so assume that it is to do with 'my' william. this william had a son william born 1774 in michaelstow, cornwall, so this could be the unfortunate boy sent off to australia. four of 1740 williams other sons went to live in guernsey and their mother was in guernsey for a number of the christenings of her grandchildren. i wonder if she would have travelled to guernsey via southampton?? maybe that is why her unlucky or unruly? was stealing from a ship??........theres always a theory isnt there?? love jane

Matilda was part of the 3rd fleet on that date. I think that it must be a typo on that particular website - all the other lists that came up on google give Southhampton as the sentencing place, and there is only the one William Hawkins on the Matilda.

edit - oops, I see that the report quoted by Bumblebee says Hants - certainly the same lad.

Southampton is in Hampshire (which is often abbreviated to Hants ) - so they probably both refer to the same thing :)
