I am interested in any information on the Sumner family of Great Budworth. One of my ancestors was Sarah Sumner, born 1815 who in 1836 married John Thorley at Alderley. I think (but lack proof) that Sarah was a daughter of Thomas Sumner born around 1795 at Witton or Budworth. He was a farmer and carrier. If you have information I would be very grateful, and willing to share what I have so far.

I think you have the Sarah Ive been looking for!
My ancestor is John Thorley born 1816 who married a Sarah who was born in 1815...I know she was born in Gt Budworth, but her surname was unknown. Could it be the same sarah? Children are Ann, Elizabeth and James.

Nice to hear from you, but I fear it looks like it's probably two different families. I know virtually nothing about John Thorley - I think he may have been illegitimate, born in Marton (probably the one near Congleton in Cheshire). If I am right (and I might not be!) John Thorley and Sarah Sumner married in Alderley in 1836. My reason for thinking this is that their first child was born Snelson Heath, not far from Alderley. In the 1841 census John and Sarah were living in Heaton Norris (Lancashire side of Stockport). John was an agricultural labourer, later a carter, and their children were William (1837), Jane (1838) and Mary, my great grandmother (1840/41). Later they had Thomas (1845), Ann (1849) and James (1851).
It is of course possible that I don't know the full story and would be very interested to hear about your research. Who knows?
With best wishes from Cornwall
