My convict answer Mary Hill was tried for receiving stolen goods in 1834 at the Bristol Quarter Sessions. I'd like to track down any newspaper report of the trial. Does anyone know what papers were covering that area at that date and where I could find copies?

It looks as though the Bristol Journal (http://fishponds.org.uk/brispapr.html) would be your best bet and the Bristol Records Office (http://www.bristol.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/leisure-and-culture/records-and-archives/) could be the place to start.

Good luck,

The Bristol Mercury has a small mention, dated December 27th 1834, (issue number 2339) - committed to Bristol Gaol. I think it says William Cunningham for stealing from James Merrett and Mary Hill for receiving.

Also January 17th 1835, Bristol Mercury, issue no 2342

The Gist of it is.....

William Cunningham and Mary Hill stole various items from James Merrett of Somerset Square entering the house whilst the family were at church on 21st December 1834 - some of the property was traced to their lodgings.

Thanks, bumblebee. That's a big help. I wonder what the connection of Mary was to William, her boyfriend perhaps?
