I have 2 lots of families that worked/owned pubs and a hotel(royal oak,I think). They were Fred Heathershaw and his wife and children....His sister Ellen mary Harvey (died 1904)and her family. Its not alot to go on Im afraid....but just a few more snippets would be grand.....will try and find the other papers that I have that may give a bit more info.

Hi Deb64
Are you looking for information on the pub in question, or are you looking for census info for the Heathershaw family?

Hello and welcome to the British-Genealogy forums
Any idea of where these pubs were?
Do you have marriage and birth certificates for the families mentioned?
What information would you like to find?

Hi debs,
I think I may have found Fred in the 1901 census listed as manager wine bar stores. It gives his place of birth as Lincolnshire.
Also Ellen Mary Harvey on 1891 with husband John F ? listed as tobbaconist, bar and wine dealer.
and on 1901 with husband Issac G F? listed as licensed victualler (pub) and tobbacoanist.
Are these yours if so what information is it that you are looking for.?

Hello Michael,
Thanx for your reply.I was looking for a fuller story behind the pubs that my ancestors were in.Fred was in 7 May Day Green in the 1901 census with his family and mother-in-law.......I dont know much about his wifes side of the family. It says he is a manager of a mine bar. His sister's mother-in-law is on the same page but in the Royal Oak as a hotel keeper.
I'm unsure if these are actually near each other.....all I have at the moment are names and jobs....no meat on the bones as it were.

Hello geoffers,
Thanx for the welcome,I'm sure you will read through the replies to my thread so I wont repeat myself if I can help it.Ellen Mary lived at 5,Huddersfield Rd with her husband and all the addresses were in Barnsley,St.Mary.
I dont have actual certificates for these just copies of alot of my ancestors baptisms that I had took at the Lincoln Archives(my local office).
Any information that puts meat on the bones so that I have a fuller picture of their lives would be greatful.

Hi Jane,
Thanx for the welcome, Ellen Mary was married to John Issac Fielders Harvey...(quite a mouthful...lol) but it isnt always put down in full in the census copies I have.I am looking into the jobs that they were in, the families as a whole and the people that were involved...i.e the Harvey family that brought john into the world and Freds wife's family.

Hi Debs. I lived in Barnsley for 55 years and had my wedding reception at the "Royal Oak" which is a hotel/pub on Church Street, almost opposite Barnsley Town Hall. Church Street becomes Huddersfield Road about 1/2 mile to the North and # 5 would be close to the start.
May Day Green had several hotel pubs, in fact the town was quite well known for having quite a lot.
There was a Wine Bar "The Wine Shades" very close to May Day Green, and I suppose at one time may have carried that address. Development and road routing gave it another address in later years.
Let me know if you are looking for specific buildings, I may be able to help out with photos.
St Mary's Church, the oldest church in Barnsley is between the Royal Oak and # 5 Huddersfield Road.

Hi Peter,
Oh my goodness!!!! All this help is absolutely marvellous!!!!! I wish I had found this site shortly after I started my family tree as Im sure the brick walls wouldnt be existing today...lol.Thankyou for your responce into my problem. The offer of the photos would be great as Im sure that unless you left only recently things would be different again.
I was wondering if there was a way of finding out when these people took charge as it were of these buildings...a bit like a c.v of who was there at set times (if you can understand???)
I wonder if that church would be where my ancestors were buried?
Thanks again for your help in putting a little bit more meat on the bones I have.
Debbie.

Hi Debbie,
I am a licensee in Oldham and previously in Bolton. Local historians in both towns have produced books of pubs and inns that list all licensees since the opening of most of the pubs along with a brief history of some. It may be a long shot but Barnsley may also have similar books in the local history section of their library or even the local family history society.
Jane. :)

Hi Debbie. It would seem that this is not as straightforward as it may seem.
Over the years, the name "Royal Oak" has been applied to several inns/taverns/pubs, in Barnsley.
I see that you are not that far from Barnsley.
Barnsley library has an excellent Local History section and would certainly be worth contacting.
One series of books worth looking at the library would be "Barnsley Streets" by E Tasker. The series was out of print, but Barnsley Library may have copies.
An older map of Barnsley would also be useful if you intend a visit. The town centre has changed a great deal since the 1960's.
The "Royal Oak" that I refered to is now named "The Assembly" and previously it went through several name changes.

Thankyou to both Jane and Peter for this further information.I will try and find the phone number to Barnsley and see if I can go over and go thru any records that they may have.....nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.I will obviously post if I get anywhere with it.
Debbie
