I traced my GGrandmother (Ketura Laver) to the Muller Orphanage in Bristol in the 1881 census (over 2000 orphans). No idea as to her parent's names.

Does anyone have any hints as to any records that were likely to be made at the time,, and how to access them, or is this likely to be my "brick wall" on this side of the family?

I know nothing of orphanages, but I understand this was indeed a fine establishment that cared well for it's children.

Hi,
My ancestors were place in the Mueller Orphanage when their parents both died in 1858. To be eligible for entry, you had to have a birth certificate and be able to prove you weren't illegitimate. You were then given a good basic education and, more importantly a job or apprenticship to go to when you reached a certain age.

You can request a copy of any info relating to your family from this institution.
