View Full Version : Generations 8.5 losing text

I am hoping someone can tell me what the solution is to the recent problem.
When XP first came out I found that Generations 8 would not run properly, and indeed if you selected a record text would just disappear upon saving an exiting.
I purchased the update Generations 8.5 that has worked perfectly for a long time. Suddenly without warning I am losing text again, not only in one file but all my Generations files. I dare not open them now!
I have used the XP Windows compatibility wizard and changed the default for the Generations back to Windows 2000 (which it worked on), and then back to 98. However the problem persists.
I know I should buy a newer program, but have never found anything as good as Generations. If I cannot find a quick solution I'll just have to use a dual boot system before my files corrupt.
TIA Steve

Does Generations make an automatic backup? If so save it under another name until you get sorted out! I don't use Generations but it is known that some programs stop functioning after a certain age like 10 yrs. Things do get corrupted. Sorry I can't help you Steve, but I know there are wizards on the forum that will:)

Hi Vanessa,
I always save a back up copy to my D drive after every use, plus use a third party to store files. I have years of work that I cannot afford to lose. I only cleaned up a couple of months ago by reformatting the C hard drive, and re-installing programs, as over the years you get so much clutter. I have tried using a back up file without success, perhaps I should un-install Generations and put it back on again.
Thanks,
Steve

This problem with Generations is caused by a clash with another program. My version started glitching like this after I installed a new scanner & it turns out that the OCR software that was installed at the same time was the culprit. In my case just removing the OCR program from Start-up solved the problem.
There is a Generations forum at Genealogy.com, Trevor Rix is on hand to help with problem solving if a clash of programs isn't the cause in your case.

Hi Suedent,
Thanks, that is a good tip, and I'll certainly visit the other site. I have just changed my mouse from a Logitech MX510 to a MX518, so it is new in the Start Up. However I do not think I can remove it or I'll lose my mouse. I will give it a go though by closing it down in Task Manager and seeing if Generations becomes stable, if I can still operate by keyboard.
Appreciated.
Steve

Hi Suedent,
Spot on!
Mouse still works in a basic mode, but Generations now back to its old self. Much appreciated. I must now contact Logitech to see if there is a patch.
Thanks again for the tip.
Steve:)

Glad to help, I know how frustrating that glitch is.

I have had the most helpful reply from Logitech Support that had never occurred to me |banghead|. Do not run your family history program at the same time as using the Logitech Setpoint software. |computer| Now that is what I call support!|shakehead
