I am trying to find my great grandfather's family history in Chester Cheshire.

Can anyone give me an idea of how large the city/town was in the mid 1800's-1848 to be exact. (As an Australian I have little knowledge of the area).

All I have is a year, his parents names and his father's occupation. He immigrated to Australia ~ 1872.

Try a google search on old-maps - it might give you an idea?
Note to self: sort out a list of useful websites so that I can give people specific information/help|blush|
