Thanks for the nice welcome.
I'm not sure i'm on the right board???? but having trouble finding a birth on bmd. My grandmother was previously married and had 6 children. I can find 5 birth regs but not the 6th.
Looking for Gracie Becker born 1929 mothers maiden name Pickin. Location Shoreditch area.
Where is it ? All the other children are under the name Becker so Gracie can't be any different. A cousin tells me she married Sandy Kettle ,but can't find that marriage either.
Thanks for your help

There is no Grace or Gracie Becker in 1929 that I can see. There is a Kitty Becker in 1928, 1st quarter - probably a sister. Could it be another name?

I have had a look at the GRO for 1929 and 1930 and there are no Beckers with the mother's maiden name of Pickin, either.
How certain are you of the year?

I've tried all sorts, even Baker.
Free BMD has only 3 children with the first name of Gracie registered between 1928 and 1930 in London.
Westwood, mother Day in Wansworth
Hudson, mother Osborne in Paddington
Jupp, mother Coppen in Camberwell
Though Kitty is very evident.
There are only 9 Pickin mothers around the whole of the country for this period and none possible as Grace.

Kitty is her sister. She was called Becker,Its from a family bible and all her siblings are correct. Her father died 1929 and i'm waiting for his death cert to see what date of birth. Could be possible that her mother reg in a different name, but she was known as Gracie Becker. Her mother Florence Emmeline nee Pickin started another family in 1932 with my grandfather Arthur Pelling. They had 7 children, but didn't marry until 1940.
Heres a puzzle; They all have the same father Arthur Pelling
1932 Arthur Noel Pelling-St Pancras -mothers maiden name Palmer not Pickin
1933 William Charles Pelling -Islington- mmn-Palmer
1935 Patrick Jubilee Pelling - Islington-mmn-DAY
1936 Sheila Pelling- Islington-mmn-Day
1939 Robert Pelling - Finsbury-mmn-Cotton.
1940 Edward Pelling- Amersham -mmn- Pickin the correct name
1942 Roy Pelling -Ashton u Lyne-mmn -Pickin, once again the correct name.
note the last 2 sons born after marriage in 1940.
Please can someone tell me whats going on!!!!
Thanks Donna

I see she married Arthur Pelling under her maiden name of Pickin and not her previous married name of Becker. Is it coincidence that Mutley found one with MMN of Day, which she seems to have used more than once.

I can't tell you what's going on but I can't help but smile at Cotton... Pickin.
It sounds as though your grandmother had a very colourful life, what with the thirteen children and the pubs and the husbands!
Getting back to business, I think, given what you have told us, you have to be open to all possibilities. Gracie could have been a middle name or simply a name she was known by. Her surname (if she was born in 1929) was not registered under the name of Becker or Pickin or Pelling.
Given that you know, I think, the place of residence in 1929, you might be better off going to the local registry office for births in 1929.

Yes if you look closer its a right Cotton Pickin Day.
I only found the first family recently. Quite a shock to dad to find he had 6 half brothers and sisters.
Thanks

I have just searched bmd for a possible marriage to mr Kettle about 1950 and found one marrying a Day /Golding in Surrey N. Coincidence or what?
Tried to match up looking for female christian name, but found nothing in 1950 1st and 2nd quarterunder DAY.
I MIGHT GIVE UP and wait for her fathers death cert from 1929 to see what address is on there and take it from there.
Thankyou to all of those kind people who help the likes of me.

Just a quick update if anyone is interested.
No wonder I couldn't find Grace Becker marrying mr Kettle, because she wasn't actually called that.
Her 5 siblings were called Becker and fathered by George Becker and her mother was Florence Pickin .Eveyone knew her as Grace.Becker. Now I have her birth cert and she is called June Pickin. Father unknown. She married Philip S Kettle in the name of June Becker. She probably never knew her real name until later in life.
My goodness how complicated. You need to be in the special branch for this family tree lark.
