I am hoping someone might be able to help me with my grandmother and her mother
Frances Louisa Lewis born 29/06/1888 in Union workhouse wotton /within no father Mother Mary elisabeth Lewis a domestic servant of Barton St Mary.
apart form knowing Frances went to India and married a soldier Charles Dowell.
, I can find no trace of her or her mother I am hoping someone might be able to help.
I am hoping to go to the record office sometime to see if they have any workhouse records but if anyone could help I cannot find them on the 1891 census or 1901

I realise that Lewis is not a rare name in these parts and even Mary Elizabeth seems a much used name but any ideas would be welcomed.

thanks anyway sandie

G'day Sandie,

You didn't mention which workhouse. Some had Chapels (eg Newport Chapel) as part of the workhouse campus and the baptism records may survive from there. A trip to the local Records Office seems the best idea.
