I have been checking the gro for a birth which took place in Styal Prison during 1977. Unfortunately I can't find what I am looking for - does anyone know where (registration area) these births would be made? This person's date of birth is quoted on her daughter's birth certificate so I am clear of theyearand quarter I am looking for. Is there any reason someone's birth is not listed on gro?

Styal Prison (http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/prisoninformation/locateaprison/prison.asp?id=519,15,2,15,519,0) is in Wilmslow, Cheshire (so I have moved this thread to the Cheshire forum) :)

I think that Wilmslow falls in to the Cheshire East registration district. However, I am sure that someone out there will know for sure...

This is a good pdf to keep on file for registration districts:

I think the registration district is Altrincham, but it seems to move around and end in 1974.

as an aside; I remember walking to Styal woods as a kid, growing up on the southern edge of Manchester, do kids walk that far these days!!!!

I have never seen a parent's DoB (or age) on a child's birth certificate? I am not doubting what you have in front of you but are you sure it is the mother's details on there - and does it say who entered the information?

What do you mean when you say "I have been checking the gro"? Do you mean the GRO index or that you have actually applied to GRO asking them to check?

What exactly does it say on the daughter's birth certificate?

The GRO indexes are organised according to when the birth was registered, not when the birth occurred.
