This John SUTHERLAND was born in the 1760s to John and Betty SUTHERLAND, who lived near the parish church at Kildonan. They had an older son known as "Ian meadhonach" who married Catherine GRANT. Rev. Donald Sage, in Memorabilia Domestica, reports that Ian beag "became principal farm servant of a well-doing sonsy widow in Glutt of Braemore, Caithness. He pleased her so well in this capacity that, in a very short time, she offered to promote him to the rank of husband – an offer with which John instantly closed, and found himself very comfortable" (page 131-132, Second Edition, 1899). Who was the sonsy widow?
