HMS ships in the Med 1940-1942

I am attempting to find which ships my grandfather served on during WW2. We know he went through the Med in 1940-42 via Malta and from there through the Suez canal to the naval base in the Maldives (Addu Attoll - Oct 43) but have no idea which ship or ships he was on.

My grandfather Percival Slater was a sick berth attendant. We only have vague stories of a convoy to Malta and a night attack in which 6 out of 8 HMS ships were sunk and a possible battle in November.

We will be looking at the ships muster records in the National archive but would like to narrow the search to the most likely ships. It will probably be a needle in the provebial situation but if anyone has any information on ships in those areas I would appreciate it.

My uncle served on HMS Welshman which was sunk in Feb 1943 in the Med. Google Malta and WW 2 and you will find some ships mentioned. Also try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Pedestal

As I'm sure you already know "Prior to 1972 all Royal Navy personnel were given their service record when they were discharged".

But "the only data held on Royal Navy personnel who served prior to 1972 is their Service details (number, rank, name etc) and a list of dates and ships/shore bases"

Does that not provide what you're asking for?

I'm ready to believe anything you tell me ;) because I don't personally have any interest in WW2 research.

Peter - Thanks for that. I have got his service record but it only seems to mention administrative shore bases. It may be that he was not permanent ships crew but was only on ships in transit between them.
