Hi

I think I must hold the record for the most illegitimate children born to one person.

Mary Winkup between the years of 1793 to 1801 baptises 9 (yes nine) children with no father(s). Some children are called illegitimate, others are not, but Mary is called a "Spinster" at all times.

What makes it even more confusing is that the dates of birth for some of the children makes it impossible for Mary to be the mother. On some occasions literally only two or three months between the childrens birth dates. Did the Vicar get the dates wrong or did Mary or could Mary not have been the mother?

Bringing up 9 children with no father(s) I assumed that she must have been in receipt of Parish Relief. I have tried to find these Papers but there seems to be some confusion as whether they still exist or where they would be lodged.

So, if anybody knows the area around Silsden, Steeton or Kildwick in West Yorkshire please could they help? Alternatively, if anybody else has any bright ideas how I could find out any information please, please let me know.

Thanks
Wattsy

Bear in mind that a baptism is not the same as a birth. Children were often baptised several months - or even years - after their birth for various reasons. In some cases, the parish priest would travel from place to place, doing batches of baptisms as and when, parents may have struggled financially to sort out a baptism, children were often done in "job lots" - presumably for economical purposes etc.
So your Mary *could* be the mother of children baptised within a couple of months of each other - but of course, there could be some other explanation!

Hi Mark

If it were only that easy to explain. The dates given were birth dates not baptism dates. For example, John born 9th Dec 1798, Ann born 12th Jan 1799 - one born just over one month later than the first, but both baptised 3rd July 1800 together with other siblings.

Any ideas.
Thanks
