I am looking for any information on William FIELD born 1757 in Hertfordshire, Any idea where in Hertfordshire?

no details on wife or family his son Edward FIELD b 1769 in Wiltshire, England d jan 21 1826 in Australia m Elizabeth (Sarah) Mitchell b 1770 d 1837 This would make William 12 when he bacame a father. Although not impossible, it does seem a bit doubtful.

I am a little confused.

I know ages don't seem right but that's only information I have been given. Very little on William. His son Edward was enlisted as a Private in 102nd Regiment of Foot, NSW Corps, Australia on 27th July 1789, 7 weeks after the corps was formed. Edward came to colony of NSW with 2nd fleet, arriving in Sydney on the "Scarborough" 28th June 1790. Edward was married in NSW, Australia his wife Elizabeth "Sarah" Mitchell was born around 1770 in England (elizabeth sarah mitchell known as betty as convicted on 6th March 1790 at the Assizes. Betty's crime was aiding and abetting in breaking and entering into a dwelling in Studley, North Wiltshire, stealing of 5 cheese and other sundry items, sentenced to 7 years, transported on "Mary Ann" arriving Sydney 9th July 1791.

Okay.

How do you know that William was born in 1757 or thereabouts and how do you know that it was in Hertfordshire?

If Edward's father was named on any military documentation as a William, then fair enough. But where did the date come from?

How sure are you that it was Hertfordshire? I only ask as Hertfordshire and Herefordshire have been confused before now. Hertfordshire is a fair old step from Wiltshire, whereas, you only need to trundle south through Gloucestershire from Herefordshire to hit Wiltshire.

I was just given Edward's father's details as b 1757 and in Hertfordshire. I don't know where the information about Edward's father came from. I got some members of family different line born in NSW Australia and death in India. Edward birth details correct as far as I can tell from about 8 other people researching same person but no one has details on his father William. Edward Field born 1769 Wiltshire, England.

Do you have a baptism record for Edward? If so, where in Wiltshire was it?

no just been given information from other families researching same lines. Information seemed to come from miliary records, and maybe immigration.

Right. The first step is to try to find the baptism for Edward. This should then provide his father's name for definite and possibly his mother's name.

You may wish to go back to your sources (other family members etc) and find out where they obtained their information. Once we know where they found their information, it will hopefully give us a better idea of where we can look to help you.

The last thing that we want is for you to go hurtling off on the wrong track so it might be wise to double-check what you have so far.

Good luck! |hug|
