I have been researching my hubbies family on his mothers side she was Doris Raphael last of 12 children none following the jewish faith now.
I have quite a lot on this family untill around 1800's sticking point is 1841 census says foriegn 1851 says germany british subject but I can get no further
someone else researching did find their marriage in the Register of Marriages Index of the Ashkenazi Jews
31st July 1833 Sarah Franks sara daughter of shlomo Zalaman
Samuel Raphael Shmuel son of Meir HaLevi
thats 1st problem I havent found them on 1861 although I know sarah didnt die till 1870, samuel died in 1858.
We are descended from his son Joseph whose birth certificate I have but although I know he married Louisa Wakeman cant find when on the other hand I have Josephs sons marriage but not his birth both would have been around 1874.
any suggestions?

Sandie,
If you are still searching for your Franks/Raphael family in 1861 census let me know and I will try to find them for you. It would be helpful to have their approximate dates of birth.
Best wishes

Thanks for the offer I think I've gone crosseyed looking!
Sarah Raphael nee Franc/ks was born c1813 in Germany (1851 census)
Joseph was born 1852 Wentworth Court
Rebecca I found she married Abraham Erhlich and Catherine Raphael was with them
Soloman was born 1849 in whitechapel
Adelaide born 1851 whitechapel
Myer born 1845
Reason I needed 1861 was I had hoped where in Germany Sarah was born but as I have since had some census from America on Rebecca and Myer and it still only gives Germany guess I am not going to be lucky, so although it would be nice to find them on 1861 and 1881 where they also seem to have gone to ground please dont spend ages just a quick look to see if "its my age" why I cant find them.
This family seem to appear & disappear I have Josephs birth certificate cant find his marriage anywhere his son Samuel I have his marriage but not birth!!

Hi again, Sandie.
I have checked both editions of the Jewish Victorian by Doreen Berger and also the censuses on line (1861-1881) but I have failed to find anything new. I assume (as you know when Sarah died) that she did not remarry at all?
The only thing I can suggest now is do you know where she is buried? If it is a United Synagogue burial then it is possible that armed with the date of death and cemetery details you can get a copy of the actual burial book page. Some of these give a line *native of* followed by number of years in UK. There is no certainty of this, because this information wasn't on all burial entries for this time frame, so I would want you to know the risk, but it might be worth a go. If you go to www.british-jewry.org.uk (http://www.british-jewry.org.uk) (which is free and available to anyone interested) and enter the site, there is a link giving details of how to contact the USBS and also, should the need then arise, the London Beth Din.
Hope this helps.
Sorry the news on the censuses isn't better.

thanks for looking Sherry,
Yes I do have certificate for Sarahs death in 1870 and she hadnt remarried.
when she died she was living at 7 Chicksand place mile end new town so I guess it would be a local synagogue to there. so I will do some checking.
Some one did send me Sarah,s parents burial record but there is nothing on that or on Samuel & Sarahs marriage which was copied from the register of marriages index for Ashkenazi Jews unless it was missed in the translated version.
one day I am sure all will be revealed!!!!!!!
