I have come across my first military ancestor and am unsure how to find out if there are any records of him. Any advice would be useful.
James Medley.Private. Scots Fusilier Guards (1860). Taken from Birth Certificate of his Daughter.
Regards.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp?j=1 Enter his name and years he was in service eg: 1850 - 1890. You can order the documents online or request a search - costs about 8 pnds if they come up with something. You will not be able to see an index of names just a WO file #, and that is what you quote along with all the other information necessary for obtaining documents. When you do order state his birth yr and place of birth, parents if known as there may be more than one person with that name.

Also google "Scots Fusilier Guards" + 1860. Or you could wait for one of our military forum members, who are experts, to read this and help you out.

Partly dealt with in your other Medley thread.

I mentioned this research guide...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=14

(If he was in the Army in 1854, he will not be indexed by name in the WO 97 catalogue)

The following one is also relevant...

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=23

I don't know if you have any eveidence about whether he was discharged or died in service but this can have a bearing on where you search.
