Hi,
This is driving me mad|rant|
I am trying to find George Steen, born c 1838. His parents were George Steen, c 1803 Cheshire and Jane Taylor, c 1804 Wrexham.
His siblings before and after him were born in Birkrnhead, so I assume he was too. I can trace his siblings but not him |banghead|
I have found a George Steen of about the right age in the Workhouse in Birkenhead in 1881 but am not sure if it is him.
Does anyone know anything that might put me out of my misery ?
Best regards,
Toots.

Thankyou very much, Annie. :)
That certainly is my George, living with his sister. The death may be right, too. I have no idea what happened to him in the years in between. I have looked and looked but cannot work out where he was. :(
Thanks again for your help.
Best regards,
Toots.

Hi Toots
Found this on the IGI.....it is an extracted record so should be accurate but it is in Surrey. The IGI does have a birth record for Birkenhead but it is not extracted. No idea if this helps

Regards
Fiona

Thankyou, Fiona and Michael :)
That definitely looks like them. 'Chalotte' must be brother Charles.
Thanks again. You are both brill!!

This one is definitely written on the original census as female, (actually spelt Charlotte).

I thought it may have been Charles because I have looked for a birth for a Charlotte Steen and cannot find one, c 1840.
Thanks for putting me straight.

It is possible that the enumerator got it wrong - has been known to happen |banghead|
I couldn't find a birth reg either, but it is possibly that as Civil Reg had only just started, not all births were correctly registered.

This is perhaps demonstrated by George's birth - you know when and where he was born, but I can't find a GRO registration in Chertsey or anywhere else come to that.

So maybe there was no Charlotte!

Maybe you are right. I have seen males recorded as females before, and vice versa.

This looks like part of the family in 1851:
HO107/1961 folio 352 page 43, Deacon St, St Mary de Lode parish, Gloucester, Gloucestershire
Jane STEEN, wife, Mar, 45, Labouring woman, Denbighshire
Charles ", son, 8, Cheshire
Ralph ", son, 5, Cheshire

Margaret STEEN age 20 was unmarried & a servant in Birkenhead in 1851.

Ralph went to sea. Maybe George did too, & that it why he is missing from the censuses.

Thanks Wirral,
I found Ralph Steen, aged 27, married, assistant engineer on board a ship, place of birth given as Birkenhead, but cannot read the name of the ship
I found a George Steen in 1871, aged 27, 2nd mate, on board HMS Humboldt but his place of birth is given as Aigburth(?) Liverpool

Aigburth is in the south of Liverpool, a 2d ferry ride from Birkenhead.
