Looking for information on the emigration of Joseph Stoodley / Studley of Winsham, Somerset to America 1869. I remember coming across an entry on a passenger list some time ago but I can't find again. It listed Joseph's occupation as hurdlemaker & I found out later that this was his occupation. He was born in 1836 and married to Ann and had 5 children at the time of his emmigration.
Any & all help would be much appreciated!

Jean,
Thank you for your response.
Yes, this is the same family. David is my grandfather.
What is complicating matters is that Joseph's surname changed between from Roper & Stoodley / Studley over the years.
He was born Joseph Roper. His father was Abraham Roper, who was the bastard son of Grace Stoodley & Robert Roper. In the 1841, 1851, 1861 censuses, he is listed as Joseph Roper. On his marriage certificate in 1859, he used Joseph Stoodley. In all of the US censuses, he is listed as Studley.
So, I'm not exactly sure what name he was using when he emmigrated!
