A Census Folio is defined as a single leaf in an Enumerators Book. It has a "Front" side and a "Back" side, each with its own Enumerator Page number.

Questions:

How can you determine which side is which, from the images in a published CD set?

How can you be sure that two successive image pages belong to the same Folio, and are not the back and front pages of two different Folios?

Where is there a definitive statement of the Folio page numbering to be used when indexing the 1851 Census, and what organisation defined it?

What is the full normal sequence of Census pages in the original 1851 Enumerators Books, from the start of an Enumeration District up to and including the page with the first Schedule in that Enumeration District?

The page with the folio number printed on the top right hand corner is the first of the two sides.

Each page of the original book has a page number, which should be consecutive. (Those page numbers should never be used as part of the reference number though, as they occur in every book).

The PRO
(and don't try to re-invent what is the official one - many try, and it doesn't work and just ends up in confusion)

The first page is always folio 1. But there may be several census pieces and books all with a folio 1. There is no specific "end" number, as that varies according to the population of each sub district.
