Hi Everyone

Well i am totally baffled. I am trying to find birth or census information for Martha Elizabeth Thripleton born in the year 1856 and sisters Annie Maud Thripleton and Hannah Maud Thripleton. Martha Elizabeth Thripleton got married in Leeds and sent letters from an address in leeds so its only a hunch that perhaps the family were from leeds.

I have tried free bmd and looking up census material with no luck. I have also tried looking on ancestry.com.au at census material with no luck. I am in Western Australia so im unable to get access to alot of information.

Can anyone help? I know they existed its just a matter of finding the people.

1861 census has them with the surname spelt with a double "p":

RG9/3393/27/1

Tunbridge Street, Leeds:

Are you sure that Hannah's midle name was Maud - the same as Annie's? I ask, as I have found this:

Births Sep 1874
THRIPPLETON Hannah Mabel Leeds 9b 598

Also this:

Births Mar 1874
Thrippleton Annie Leeds 9b 542

Hi,
Not sure if I've been in contact before (certainly not on this forum as this is first time I've seen your thread). I am a descendant of John Thrippleton, Martha Elizabeth's father. She was known, confusingly, as Aunt Pattie by my grandmother and married Charles Knight before moving to Wiltshire and then Solihull areas.

Thanks Nicolina,

John married three times, possibly four. Elizabeth H Thrippleton (n. Seanor) is my great grandmother. In the 1851 census(I am told) he is living with his widowed mother and a son James. James is a mystery as is James' mother. In 1855 John married a Sarah Ann Wood who is the mother of Marthe Elizabeth Thrippleton who is the starting point of this thread.

according to the 1851 Census (HO107/2315/158 Page 33)
Waterloo Terrace, Bramley
James is listed as Elizabeth's Grandson BUT John is unmarried (not a widower) which looks as if James is actually John's nephew not his son.

not for another puzzle.
Elizabeth (transcribed as THREAPLETON) is on the 1861 Census.
RG09/3356/36 Page 20
Waterloo Cottage, Farmers Fold, Bramley
Elizabeth aged 75 b. Pudsey
James S. WARD (Grandson) aged 12 b. Bramley occ: Wool Piecer

this James' details match those of James in the 1851 Census, apart from the surname. So was there a mistake made by the Enumerator in 1851 or was James illegitimate and his mother married a man called WARD?

Maria THRIPLETON married Samuel WARD at St Peter, Leeds in 1849 (Dec qtr)

so it looks as though James was Maria's son

Hi again Nicolina,
Thanks this is great stuff. However it creates another puzzle, as the only definite sibling of John that I knew of was Martha. I suppose maria could be a mistranscription of Martha but I know that Martha did not die around 1850 and later married a chap called Waite. I also assumed that Martha Elizabeth (b. 1857) was probably named after John's sister. Looking through my notes I have a James Thrippleton b 1849 d1916 so I guess this John's nephew. Many thanks again - you've revived my interest in this strand of the family!

Hi Kay,
I don't know if it will help but I have Threapleton's in my husband's tree but only in the 1700s. Hannah born 1752 buried 1825 at Calverley St Wilfred, Yorkshire. Her father is Elias married in 1745 at the same church. I know the parish records are on the web not sure of the exact web address www.calverley.inf/calv_enter.htm Don't know if this will help but alot of the parished in that area are indexed. If you get stuck with the email I will try to find the main site.

Regards
Val

I searched using varients and THREAPLETON came up, so it looks as though there might be some connection. The site mentioned by Val is a good one and can be accessed at
