can anyone help me with ideas?, i have a WILLIAM SPICER he was born 31st march 1834 but not christened until 27th november 1874.
he was married with children by this time , but i can think why someone would want to get christened at the age of 40. any ideas would be lovely.
The late christening could mean a change of religion or a new vicar. In my own case I was not christened until I was 16. I went to a Plymouth Brethen sunday school as a youngest then joined a Church of England youth club, hence being christened into the Church of England.

i dont think it was a change of church as his children were christened there years before him

Had any of his near family recently died? He may have been feeling frail and wondering about what would happen if he died unchristened.
Always assuming that the person christened in 1874 was the same William SPICER as born in 1834.
Cheers

Were the family perhaps preparing to travel overseas- I know of a prime example here in Torquay where all the children of one family were baptised as adults shortly before sailing away to America.
