We had a success today. After having an e-mail arrive out of the blue, we were able to put some names onto two photographs of Sharon's family (Norwegian side) that are on our website. From that email we were able to trace

Antoinette Hasvog, born Norway 1841, living in South Dakota 1900
.
1911 Antonette Havsoog a widow, along with her son Carl Calson, wife and children in Saskatchewan.

Antonette and her husband were Carlson when they left the town of Hasvog in Norway to come to the U.S. Somehow at Immigration their surname became Hasvog, and they continued to use it. There eldest son got it right and was known by Carlson.

Easy question when you have all the answers.

Excellent news, Peter! |hug|

I have moved this to the Success Stories board so that it may be of encouragement to others.

You never know when Lady Luck will smile on you!

We have received several photographs over the past weeks along with some excellent information.

This photograph is perhaps my favourite because although the scene may be familiar, it is not always possible to identify the date, location or people.

We believe it was taken at Summit, South Dakota between 1907 and 1911.

Left to right.. Anton Carl Carlson, his son Olaf and his mother Antonnette Havsvog.

We know that they came to the U.S in about 1892.

I can't even imaging what hardship life must have thrown at them

The original photographs are in Denver Colorado and we are currently arranging to have high resolution scans done of the originals.

Photographs and updated family history will eventually be uploaded to our website.

What a superb photo...it tells a story all by itself.

What tough people they had to have been. I can just imagine winters there.
Brrrrrrrrrrrrr.!!

Hi Peter, were they farmers ? From the picture it looks as if they are surrounded by nothingness.

What a treasure Peter, surprising some-one even had a camera there, & still so clear.

I shall continueto flaunt a Family photo in the hope the people can be identified. (as soon as I find somewhere to flaunt it. ;)

Wendy. As to the who - how - why of the photographer is and probably will always remain a mystery. When we obtain a very high definition scan of the front and back we will be sending a copy onto the South Dakota Museum.

Barnzz You will be pleased to know that this was the "built up" part. The nothingness is confined to Saskatchewan ;)

Back in the pre-internet year of 1994 I obtained an address for a lady, who is a first cousin, and wrote to her.

Her mother died at an early age and for whatever reason, her daughter, the cousin above, would have nothing to do with the family.

Two days ago, (6th August 2008) I received an e-mail from the said cousin.

She had kept the letter all these years, "until the time was right".

Needless to say, with what I know and what my cousin knows we will be able to add several pages to the family history and perhaps even correct some family legends.

I have never really related to genealogy brickwalls, to me the way forward is like a foggy road. Somedays the fog clears and one can see a bit further down the road.

Hopefully it is more than just a small gust of wind clearing the fog on this occasion Peter and you get to see a long way down the road.
