I am trying to find my Grandfather Elias Jacobs he appears in the 1871 census:
Father Benjamin Jacobs - Mother Rachael Jacobs (nee Moses)
Benjamin who was 8 Elias $ born in (1866) his sister Rosa 3 and Kate 8 mths

In the 1881 cencus they are all there except for Elias and on searching he is down as living with Solomon Cohen and Rachael Cohen as a step-son can anyone throw any light or have any idea why this should be??????????????

Thank you for reading this.

I dont think I would read too much into the use of stepson...........as Soloman was born c1851 and Rachael c 1852 they would have been very young...........not unheard of but unlikely..................there seems to be a Mark and Miriam Jacobs also do these names belong to your family?

1. Relationships of household members are to the Head of Household - therefore Elias might have been stepson to the Head only, and not to Rachael.
2. The term "step" can also mean "adopted" or "fostered".

It could also be an differant elias.............

Barbaras Elias's family are all on the 1881 census.......... like to know who Mark & Miriam were......that might tell us if its right Elias

I have discovered that the Elias who lives with Solomon Cohen is a step-daughter and not step-son. But still cannot find Elias in any of the census just wondered if he was sent away to school??? The family appear in the other census but not Elias.

He married Elizabeth Diver and at one time he was lodging with them before his marriage. He appears in the 1871 census
Benjamin Jacobs - Rachael Moses - his parents
Benjamin 8 - Elias 4 - Kate 8 months - Rosa 3

I have his marriage certificate he married Elizabeth Harriet Diver in 1889 and was living at 25 Victoria Park Road - he appears on the 1891 census and 1901 census. Just cannot find him on the 1881 census although I can find his parents etc.

I know he married outside his religion which did not please his parents. His father was married in the Great Synagogue Chambers on the 7th July 1862.

Is there any leads there?

Thank you for your help.

Well think I have exhausted the 1881...............your Elias must be hiding with my Joseph Raphael & his 3 daughters............sometimes people are not there, or at least not transcribed....sorry sandie
