NEW: Irish Surname Index...
http://www.candoo.com/eirann/index.php
A worldwide resource for connecting with relatives (and friends!) 24/7/365 with Irish connections. Listing is alphabetically by surname, and if your search is connected to Ireland it's a valid reason to post.
There are several specialist Boards to deal with the many names and counties.
The most basic reason for Posting is to be there when someone else is looking. But of course you can do your own searches on the Index and make your own connections - and you may be successful in your own efforts! The Board will contact you by email if there is a Reply or PM waiting for you.
Registration is manual only, to avoid the SPAMmers, and once registered you can communicate with anyone on the Index via public Posts or internal Private Messaging (PM).
Emails and private information are NOT displayed in the Index, and you are NOT permitted to Post any email address in public... it is important to the creator/administrator that there will be no SPAM generated or endorsed by this Index.
The DNA issue is represented. If you have something to contribute on this - or any other - issue dealing with Irish connections you are urged to check this Index out... and register if you think it could help you.
As with many useful resources in this genre, there are no charges associated. Registration and use of the resource is free.
I look forward to seeing you there.
Best,
Jim Lynch

I've tried to register... but the site seems to hang when you click on the 'Register' option. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have filled out the form and the e-mail seemed to go OK.
I don't know if it is just me, but I found it difficult to find where to register. I suppose I was looking for a button which said 'REGISTER HERE'

WELL OMG.. that was not easy. It was in fact hard to register.. But the site Also HAS TO APPROVE YOU . I dont know if its on your statement at the bottom or what. Maybe we need to suggest that the site be made easier to USE.. You know that Half of us will be using it .. and its looks like its hard to navigate just registering was hard to decipher. I hope its worth it .. It looks like the site has more than just Ireland to register. thanks chris
I am rubbing my hands in hope of much information being displayed.

It's hard work just reading the registration page. The Administrator sounds really scary! I think I'll not bother.

I registered easily enough, its just you have to wait maybe 24 hours before you know if you are accepted or not, maybe longer if he is busy, sounds like he is being very particular who he accepts, and very long winded though if he wants to get the forum up and running:confused: I await with baited breath

I'm the Admin on the Index, and if you read my comments and intro to registration with an open mind you may realise I have been through some SPAM wars to get where I am now - and after all that I am still helping people for free.
The purpose of the off-Index registration form is to process the registrations manually - myself - to ensure YOUR freedon from cascades of advertisements on the Index (and in your email boxes) for everything from penis and breast enlargement to treatments for flushing the bowels and dubious investments.
I'm also a part-time programmer/webmaster and hold down a full-time - and very demanding - job outside of the IT sector. So I don't have the blocks of time necessary to re-program the registration page... I guess I could at some point just link it to the registration form, and will get that done at some point soon when time comes available.
I'm very straight-forward and honest... one of those people who says what he means, and means what he says. I'm not trying to intimidate anyone, and if that's how you read my words so be it - I won't try to influence you otherwise. Bear in mind that I'm not selling anything, and there are no catches.
But if you register you can be assured that your email address will not be offered to anyone for any reason, every Post is checked daily (by myself) for garbage, and there are standards which will be maintained. The price is right - free - so I urge you to use the Index... the more people using it the better the results for everyone involved.
If you have any doubts about how this works, I suggest you check out the sister Board Caribbean Surname Index...
Like this one, I check it EVERY DAY for garbage and posts, and I see so many people helping others, not just posting the minimum and selfishly expecting that's all they need to do to get results. Jamaicans, especially, help each other out in today's towns and villages, finding people and records and sharing.
That's what a free resource like this is about... it's a location for sharing, self-help, and helping others.
As a webmaster who does Search Engine Optimisation I can assure you the more information you put out there the better your results... Post the same info under a surname, then under a County, and anywhere else it will be relevant. And if you want some new section or Board added, all it takes is a PM to me and it WILL receive serious consideration.
One of my bosses here in Toronto, Canada is Irish born, and during our recent discussion suggested the O'X sections under the surnames... thanks, Liam!!
So, if you are a person with a quest for information, go to the registration form and get it in there. I process registrations once a day, and unless my workload is unusually high that day you are pretty much guaranteed to be registered within 24 hours of submission.
In 9 days, without advertising, I have 18 registrations... so where's yours?
All the best...
BimJim

I didn't read the title of this thread properly |oopsredfa
It was the Canada Surname Index which I signed up for, and have received confirmation that my account has been activated.
I now can't find the website for that Forum (the confirmation e-mail didn't contain the address). I thought I had come across the link to the site on this Forum but I can't find the thread.
Is the sun getting to me??
Am I imagining things?
Can someone, please, put me out of my misery?
Thanks,
maggie

Thanks for that Frank,
Whilst you were posting, I did what I should have done in the first place and Googled it. I found the site and logged on successfully.
I told you I wasn't functioning well today!!

Hi Maggie
I found it by backtracking up the directory of the Irish Surname site, but another possibility if your Internet browser supports it is to look at your recent browsing History. Maybe the Tab next to the Favourites or Bookmarks tab on the browser page.
I've registered also on the Canada Forum (hopefully) so I'll see you around.
Regards.......Frank W

Well, I bit the bullet and between last night and tonight put in two solid hours of programming to create a registration page that looks the same as the Index and re-program the Register link... then in three minutes I attached it to my reliable email form script and it is now up and running. I have tested it myself.
As an unregistered user, when you see the front page of the Index there will be a "Register" link at left just below the header. Click on that and you will get to the Registration form.
Please let me reiterate that there are terms and conditions for the use of the Index. They are enforced and they are listed in the first Board (there are two threads in that Board right now).
The most important are that you may NOT Post emails in public, and the second is that you MUST make a worthwhile Post within one calendar month or your registration (= Posting/Reponding/PM access) will be removed.
May I further suggest that you include in your Post/s as much information and you feel comfortable with... the more you put there the more likely it is that someone else will find you.
Have a great week, everyone...
Jim
