Hello Deb,

The Star Inn is still in existence:
Cefn Y Crib/Hafodyrynys, Crumlin, Newport, NP11 5BN

Tel: 01495 244775

Give them a ring to find out which brewery they are allied to. Then, contact the brewery and ask for their archivist. They should be able to provide some information.

If the pub is a free house, and therefore not allied to a brewery, then the landlord/lady may be able to help you from any documents that they might hold.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Try the trade directories and work your way back from the 1880s. They should be available either from the local main libraries or from the County Records Office.

You could also see if it's listed here: http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/

Ask at the local library for the name of the secretary of the local history society. They usually know who to ask about the age of buildings and stuff like that.
Contact the Secretary of Gwent Family History society - the address is on the website at
www.gwentfhs.info (http://www.gwentfhs.info)
She can put you in touch with the person who has been compiling an index of pubs and licensees in Gwent. He used to be a member of the Pontypool Branch of the Society but I don't know if he still is.
