Hello all

In the course of a discussion with a cousin of mine yesterday, the following nugget of information just dropped into the conversation: that our grandfather Ernest Walter Badman was also in the Boer War, as an officer's batman - quite a high-ranking officer too, it seems.

Problem is, we have no knowledge of regiment or service number for this particular service (In WW1 he was in the RFC or RNAS) or even the officer in question, but I would nonetheless like to find out a bit more about this phase of his life.

Will this require a visit to Kew, or is there somewhere online that has this kind of info?

Thanks

Clive

It's a visit to Kew to get details of his service record in the South African (Boer) War. I've posted a thread on this forum with the usual sources of service records for the war.

Do you know the officer's name? That would help.

Thanks again for the replies - Ken, I have no other information as yet, but my cousin who imparted this info has, by her own admission, heaps of old photos she's never even looked at. So who knows maybe the answer to that question and a few more besides may come out when we get to going through them.

Cheers

If you can get the officer's name, get back to me. I may be able to find him in my shipping list and by that, the regiment.

My Gfather may also have been an officers batman, as they are found together in chambers in Ryder St, Westminster in the 1901 census.

My Gfather was Pte. William DAVIS Scots Guards and the officer was Lt the Earl of Dalhousie (Arthur Maule Ramsay) Scots Guards. Both are known to have served in the Boer War

I would be grateful if Ken Hallock could consult his shipping lists and let me know any details of their sailing to South Africa.

Thanks in anticipation
