I am after a bit of help. I have a name Gaius Maurice Smith born in Bath. I have had a look on FreeBMD's and found a marriage and death for a Gaius Maurice Smith. My questions is how many Gaius Maurice Smiths would there be between 1850 and 1893, can I say he is mine?

Have you searched the 1881 census to see if there are any other (G/C)auis and/or Maurice Smiths? - and if so, how many and what are their ages? Do his/their ages in the census match with the age at death that you've found.

Have you tried searching teh idex to wills to see if probate/admon was granted and if so do any details of next-of-kin/executors match up with other inforamtion that you've got?

I'm not even sure this is the right question.

"I have a name Gaius Maurice Smith born in Bath."

Where have you got this name from and what do you know about him? What reason do you have to believe that your man was born in Bath around that time?

"can I say he is mine?"

No, not solely on the basis of an entry in FreeBMD for a name that looks right. The answer might be yes if you had the certificates and could confirm the details from other evidence.

Please forgive me for asking stupid questions. I have checked the 1881 census and there is no spelling of Gaius. I have not yet checked the Wills but will do so thank you for suggestions and your reply.

I know the Gaius Maurice Smith is related to me as I have a copy of a will for his brother and the Smith boys were all born in Bath. Unfortunately for me he was born before 1837 so I will not be able to have a birth certificate for him and I am not sure which parish they were born - this is yet another thing I am trying to locate. I know that they were living in Southgate street in 1840. I am sorry I got his DOB mixed up.

I was trying to find out if Gauis Maurice Smith would have been a common name or if more than one person would have this name, maybe I did not ask correctly. I am sorry I have never herad of this name before except for his Father.

According to Ancestry there are 9 Gaius Smiths (Gaius as first or second name) including 2 in Gloucestershire 1847 and 1900
The one born 1848 is also on the 1881 census in Ludlow St Lawrence

[Please forgive me for asking stupid questions.]

Not stupid questions at all, your stuck and we'd like to help :)

[I have checked the 1881 census and there is no spelling of Gaius.]

I found two Gaius Smiths and a load of Maurice/Morris Smiths, there are also Guy Smths

From the 1881 census index:
SMITH, Gaius,Head,<1840>,Buck,Buck
SMITH, Gaius,Head,<1848>,Glou,Shro

[I have not yet checked the Wills but will do so thank you for suggestions and your reply.]

The will index does provide a lot of useful information in itself, date and place of death, next-of-kin/executors, addresses, etc. This may help to confirm that you have the correct death

part 2

Could he have married after 1837? This being the case, his marriage certificate should name a father, which will help to locate the correct baptism in the parish regsters. What source have you for the birth of these relatives in Bath?

[I was trying to find out if Gauis Maurice Smith would have been a common name]

As above, only two Gaius Smiths in the 1881 census, but he may have used his second name, or anglicized his first name.

Back to the point I made before...

If you get that marriage certificate, you may be able to confirm from the details in it whether or not it's the brother of your man. Then you can go searching for a birth/baptism if that's important to you. If he was indeed born before 1837, there were to the best of my knowledge only three parishes in Bath during that period so probably not an insuperable problem.

Good News at least one of these Gaius Maurice Smith is mine the one that died in 1893. He was living in Middlesex at the time.
