I have hit a big brick wall and I am wondering if anyone has any ideas what I could do next. I have recently found out that my mothers mother had a baby that neither my mother or her brothers or sisters knew about. I have her birth certificate so there is no mistake and she was born on Apr 16th 1924 in London. I cannot find her death so I am assuming that she survived and maybe was adopted. The baby's (windifred's) father died 3 months before in January 1924. After investigating a bit further I understand that it wasnt until a few years later adoptions were recorded on the original birth certificate. My mother would like to find out at least what happened to the girl, so does anyone have any ideas where I could go from here?

Thanks Dawn

Have you thought to try the Salvation Army ? Jigsaw I think it's called.

Did Winifred's mother remarry soon after? as she might have died as an infant, with the death recorded under the new surname.

Just a thought, one you most likley had too :)

Funny thing my grandmother never married again but had 6 more children and kept her original married name. None of them knew who their father was!! Does anyone know if the child died at birth whether the birth had to be registered anyway? She registered the birth about 1 week after the event.

Hello Dawn,

If you enter the word "stillbirth" in the search facility in the blue bar above, you will see that there has been some recent discussion about this. There are also links to the GRO for further details.
