Hello,

I wonder if anyone here knows about Innkeepers of Lancashire? My ancestor, Olive Rushton, nee Manley, (b.1783 Barrowford, Colne-d.1870's) was Innkeeper of New Inn, at Colne/Nelson/New Marsden area of Lancashire from circa 1841 (or earlier) through to her death I think in the 1870's.

She was widowed early on and was living with or near her children including her daughter Elizabeth and son William who were at New Inn in a few census's.

I'd love to know more about her and New Inn if any records survive.

Thanks

Bye for now

There is a book " Burnley Inns and Taverns" by Jack Nadin.

According to the blurb "An A-Z illustrated history of almost 300 past and present pubs in Burnley - "the most drunken town in England" according to one observer in 1881!
Many of the beerhouses and taverns which enabled such drunkenness are described and illustrated here - from street house beerhouses to hotels and to inns on the outskirts. Interesting historical snippets, plenty of pub photos and sight of Massey's brewery adverts."

As Colne/Nelson/New Marsden are in the Burnley area, it may contain details of the New Inn.

Check if your library can get it in for you.
