I'm doing a sort-of village study for Billinghay (Lincolnshire) and in the 1871 census came across a family with two childen born in Ohio. I can't readily find the family in the 1861 census in England, and would be grateful if anyone can find them in the US in 1860 please. (I don't have a sub to US records, hence the request.)
Based on the 1871 census details the family should be
William Skinner, aged 39,
Mary Skinner, aged 40,
Willie (William?) Skinner, aged 7
John Skinner, aged 5.
Mum and dad born Billinghay, Lincs, England. Sons born Ohio.

Thanks very much for looking Sue.
They're not mine so it's not that much of a disaster. It would just have been nice to give a slightly more accurate date for their return to the UK than 'sometime between 1856 and 1865'. :)

Presumably it's now before 1860!

Hi Sue,
My brain is not working at the moment, so I don't quite get this comment. |dunce2| Do you mean 'they returned to the UK before 1860' because you can't find them in the US then? If so, then the problem still isn't solved because I can't find them in the UK 1861 census.
Even searching for John, born 1856 +/- 5 years, America reveals nothing except what appears to be some wonderful mis-indexing, but which is (mainly) some wonderful mis-spellings by the householders and/or enumerators - Illonoyes, Delli Jersey, and Chilli. :D

My brain never works these days :(

I did, but I see your problem. Ah well.

Could they have travelled back via Canada and been there in 1860/61?

My brain did actually work with regard to that thought :) but I didn't think the Canadian census (except the 1880 as transcribed by the LDS) were easy to search so I didn't bother to ask for a Canadian 1860 look-up.
I have put 'read local newspapers' on my 'to do in 2014' list :D so I might find them then, along with my cousin's lot who went to the States but at least had the courtesy to return in time for the UK 1861 census. Might even find why they went there in the first place too. :D
