Francis MARSHALL married Sarah Hannah HAYES on the 7th August 1893 at Wollaton in Nottinghamshire.
By 1901 they were living in Chesterfield and in 1906 they were in Heath.

They had 5 children between 1893 and 1906 ...

Ernest married Annie ?
Gladys married Robert Willoughby GRUNDY
Albert married Edith ?
Elsie married Basil Horace ABRAHAM
Francis (my grandfather) married Lilian STEEL

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has any information about any of these people ...

Thank you in anticipation,

Paul Marshall

Hi Paul
Just looked on the Heath Parish Register CD's and found the following.
Baptism
MARSHALL Elsie, parents -Francis & Sarah Ann of Compton St, Holmewood, father was a Fitters Labourer. Baptised 21 Dec 1903. born 17 Sep 1903. Private baptism
Buried
MARSHALL Elsie Holmewood 3 mths 26 Dec 1903.

Not sure if this helps. Could your Elsie be the child born just after this one had died (a common practice of naming next born after a infant who died)?

Hi Neil,

Thanks for that ...
The family were at 53 Compton Street, Heath in 1906 when my grandfather, Francis was born. So this Elsie is most likely theirs, but if she died in infancy this isn't Elsie who went on to marry Basil ABRAHAM.
You say there was another Elsie born just after this one had died - is her baptism on the CD ?

Thanks again for looking,

Paul Marshall

Hi Paul
Sorry to misled you with 'Could your Elsie be the child born' meant to say 'Could your Elsie be the next child born' brain working faster then my fingers again.

There isn't anything else on the CD for that couple, just the one entry under baptisms.

Do you know where Francis was born/parents details? There is a Francis marrying an Ann Vernon in 1853 at North Wingfield. His parish is recorded as Heath.

Hi Neil,

Francis was born in 1869 at Greenhill Lane (Alfreton), son of Thomas MARSHALL, a Farmer. This information I

have from his marriage certificate and census records.

Thomas married Ann SPICK in 1865 at Southwell, Notts. I have another thread on the Nottinghamshire forum regarding Thomas & Ann ...

http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29462

Thomas died (I think) in 1895 ...

Baptised 13/11/1842 Kneeton -
-
1851 - Kneeton, Notts [Scholar]
1861 - Kneeton, Notts [Ag Lab]
1871 - Riddings, Alfreton, Derbyshire [Iron Dresser]
1881 - Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, Derbyshire [Locomotive Engine Driver]
1891 - Coventry Lane, Bramcote, Notts [Cottager]
-
Buried 26/06/1895 - from Bramcote Burial Register

I'm wondering here what happened to the family after 1901 ...

I traced Francis (1869) back in the census ...

1871 - Riddings, Alfreton, Derbyshire
1881 - Greenhill Lane, Alfreton, Derbyshire
1891 - Coventry Lane, Bramcote, Notts [Foundry Labourer]
1893 - Bramcote, Notts [Moulder] - from his marriage certificate
1901 - 72 Valley Road, Chesterfield [Fitter's Labourer]
1906 - 53 Compton Street, Heath [Colliery Fitters Labourer] - from Francis' birth certificate

Ernest and Gladys were with their parents at 72 Valley Road, Chesterfield in 1901 and the family moved to Heath

prior to 1906. They could have moved back to Notts some time between then. Possibly Bramcote or Stapleford.

The problem I have is there are too many "possibles" to be sure of getting the right birth certificates for Francis' (1906) siblings.

I have Gladys' marriage certificate ...

She married Robert Willoughby GRUNDY on 16/02/1918 at Ault Hucknall Parish Church

Gladys was 20, Spinster, father Francis MARSHALL (Fitter) - residence Holmewood Lane
Robert was 24, Bachelor, prof - Soldier, father Robert GRUNDY - residence 169 Doe Lea

So the family were still in the Heath area in 1918. Sometime after this they moved to the Leeds area.

My grandfather Francis married Lilian Steel in Hunslet in 1933.

My father was born in 1935, some time after 1937 his parents (Francis and Lilian) separated. My father was brought up alone by Lilian. I know very little about the family - Francis had another family later and I have been in touch with his granddaughter but they knew nothing about his marriage to Lilian until quite recently. They were never divorced and the lady he met changed her name to Marshall by deed poll.

As you can see I don't have a lot to go on !

I know from what my father has told me, although he didn't keep in touch with his aunts and uncles ...

Ernest (c1895) married Annie ? and they had 2 children, Edith & John, born c1925 - they possibly moved to Wrexham ?
Gladys (c1897) married R W GRUNDY and they had a son Willoughby, born c1920 - I think they stayed in Derbyshire
Albert (after 1901) married Edith ? and they had a son Albert, born c1945 - they stayed in the Leeds area I think
Elsie (after 1901) married Basil ABRAHAM, I don't know if they had children - Basil died in 1987 in Gloucester - I know nothing about them

Francis (Sr) died in 1936 in Leeds and his wife Sarah Hannah (Hayes) died in 1951 in Leeds - they are buried together in Harehills Cemetery, Leeds.

Francis (Jr) died in 1969 in Wakefield.

I'm hoping someone will read this and possibly have some information ...

Many thanks,

Paul
