|banghead| Hi Folks,
I'm an expat Englishman now living in Qld. Australia, and reading the entries I've been looking at, I do envy those people with more exotic names than my family, and whom still live in the old country and are able to access the records so easily. I've been doing Family History on and off for about 8yrs and a more fascinating and frustrating hobby one couldn't ask for.

On the disstaff side I've got back to 1841, but my paters line finishes with my Father allthough I seem to know more about him than anyone else I'm unable to find his birthplace, difficult and costly with a name like Smith.

Well I'll leave it at that as I'll probably have to post on a different thread when I find out how to do it, so TTFN.

Welcome to the Forum, Harry. Quite a few of us on here like a challenge, and have access to quite a few records, so do post your SMITH query. If you don't know where your grandfather came from then tell us what you do know and post it in the General Family History Forum.

I am researching two names in South Africa, one as common as muck and the other really rare. I made much greater strides initially with the common name, much to my surprise!!
